In case you haven't heard of Homeworld let me just describe it as one of the best RTS games I have ever played. It's on a very short list of RTS's that I go back and play every once and a while. If you're looking for a great PC game to play on your "old" hardware go find a copy of Homeworld 1 and Homeworld 2 (Homeworld Cataclysm was in between the two and basically was an x-pack).
I think the opening mission of Homeworld 1 may be one of the most memorable gaming moments I've had. The massive slaughter of an entire planet combined with the frantic pace of trying to escape along with "Adagio in C" playing in the background was absolutely stunning. It set an amazing tone for the rest of the game.
The original Homeworld came out in 2000 so you can play it on basically any type of PC and most likely even on low-end laptops. Do yourself a favor and take a few hours to try this game out.
