The Difference

Thanks to everyone who read and commented on my post below. I'm happy that people are so interested in this race. I've decided to continue writing my thoughts about it as it continues. So, if you like that sort of thing, great. If not, you have my apologies.

I came across the following video on the website of Andrew Sullivan. If you're not familiar with Andrew, I highly recommend his blog; smart commentary from a smart guy. His recent book, The Conservative Soul is particularly good. Anyway, it looks like Clinton cracked a little in yesterday's New Hampshire debate. It was almost as if she wanted to scream, "Look, what is wrong with you people? Don't you understand that I am the one who's supposed to be president next? I'm good with people. What the hell is wrong with you people?!?"

Yikes. Cool as a cucumber, wouldn't you agree?

George Will had an article today about the campaigns of Edwards and Huckabee. There was a quote there I think could also be applied to Clinton:

"Although Huckabee and Edwards profess to loathe and vow to change Washington's culture, each would aggravate its toxicity. Each overflows with and wallows in the pugnacity of the self-righteous who discern contemptible motives behind all disagreements with them and who therefore think that opponents are enemies and differences are unsplittable."

He goes on to contrast this with Obama:

"Barack Obama, who might be mercifully closing the Clinton parenthesis in presidential history, is refreshingly cerebral amid this recrudescence of the paranoid style in American politics. He is the un-Edwards and un-Huckabee [and un-Clinton -BD] — an adult aiming to reform the real world rather than an adolescent fantasizing mock-heroic 'fights' against fictitious villains in a left-wing cartoon version of this country."

Exactly. Obama wants be President of the United States. Clinton runs her campaign like she only wants to be President of Democrats and Anyone Who is Enlightened Enough to Agree with Her. Clinton's only hope is in painting Obama as inexperienced (even though their legislative careers are nearly equal in length, but anyway...), but she cannot deliver in the one area that I, and I think many others feel is the most important: she cannot heal the partisan divides that keep this nation apart. Instead, she would only wallow in them. Whereas Obama sees those divides as wounds to be healed, Clinton sees them as trenches in which to fight.

While I didn't see the debate, being in Iowa and all, from the clip you posted I have to say that that is probably the most 'real' I've ever seen Clinton. Believe me when I tell you I am most definitely NOT a Clinton fan. (I'm Indy) I think she would be absolutely terrible for the country, but that was probably the best I've seen her look, its the first time she's felt genuine. Which is funny because next to John-I'm-a-used-car-salesman-Ewards damn near anyone seems real.

I love the last line...very well said! And, I think, an accurate description.
