Shared on Mon, 01/28/2008 - 13:10I finished Ratchet and Clank: Tools of Destruction on Saturday night. I only played through it once, beating the final boss after about 4 tries.
I would definitely recommend it as a rental and if you are into platformers (a la Psychonauts), a definite buy.
I'll not post spoilers, but there is a definite "Empire Strikes Back" ending that I'm not sure was completely necessary.
Once you finish, you can go through again on "Challenge" mode, which makes the opponents much more difficulty, though you keep your gear from the first run-through, so you can continue to upgrade the weapons you have already and obtain weapons you did not. I think I was missing a few, after looking at the Wiki entries.
I didn't need to cheat to finish, i.e. look up locations of stuff or how to get a boss brought down. Most of the time if I was having trouble with opponents, after dying a couple of times, I would simply try a different set of weapons, which usually worked.
I only encountered one graphical error where I fell through the floor at one point and it took 30 seconds to die. I only mention it because it happened twice! in the same area (on my next round of battle).
Your "favorite" weapon from a selection of about fifteen or more (including various devices including the disco-dancing-inducing groovitron) will change, which is great.
The opponents get more challenging, but not precipitously so. The penalty for dying is not too harsh.
Overall a beautiful, smooth platformer that is worth your time. 9 out of 10.
PS My favorite cut-scene was landing on a planet with the computer saying "Landing in five... four" CRASH!! "Threetwoone!"
