Bayer and Trasylol

Caduceus

If any of you watched "Sixty Minutes" last night, you heard about Trasylol (generic: aprotinin) produced by Bayer for use during coronary artery bypass grafting.

The article from AP outlines the case against Bayer.  But it really boils down to a drug that may be causing more harm than help.  The additional problem is that this $500 per vial medicine can be replaced with $50 per vial medicine by invasive cardiologists and cardiothoracic surgeons.

As a health care professional, it always blows my mind that a company that produces medication to help people somehow think they are going to get away with this sort of thing instead of stepping forward and bringing the issue to light themselves.
