The Bus Video turned out to be a decent success. I wasn't super happy with it, as there were some technical issues I ran into and also just felt like it didn't last long enough. I was so concerned with getting it done and working properly, that I dropped some skits we had done to finish it. The kids loved it, which was awesome and what mattered most, it was for them.
So I picked up Smash Bros. for the Wii with some gift card money. I am mildly impressed with it. I read a review that said that "Smash Bros. is great...but it's still Smash Bros...there is nothing new to it" and they're almost right. With the exception of some really beautifully designed stages, the FINAL SMASH feature and of course the "online" play...there IS nothing new about Smash Bros.
But that's what makes it great. Think about Halo 3 and you'll see what I mean. Halo 3 is at it's core the same FPS that Halo 1 was...with a few gameplay tweaks, graphical updates and whatnot, and it was called an awesome game as well. Smash Bros. is the same, they added small stuff that added up in a big way.
I must say that I was taken aback by the amount of controls in Smash Bros. In other games, it sets the controls for you. That's it. In Smash Bros., you've got 4 different ways to play. You can play with the Remote and Nunchuk, like normal....but if you don't feel like playing that way, you can play with the wii remote sideways. Don't like that? Try using the Classic Controller (which I love by the way...that could be my all time favorite feeling controller because of it's weight (or lack thereof) and you can also use a classic Gamecube controller (this my friends is smart on Nintendo's part...any developer who is scared of developing "ground breaking" games for the Wii could always creates ones that work with either Classic Controllers or GC controllers.
They also let you customize your buttons on ANY of these controllers. Let Smash Bros. work for you! It's truly a welcome addition.
Online play seems to be hit and miss. When you sign on, you are given the "friend code" and can then choose to play against friends or at Random. At random provded to be half and half connection. The fun thing is, that while you are waiting for matchmaking to find you some players...you get to beat up the Home Run Bag! This is a good way to pass the time and warm yourself up. That right there made me smile bigger than anything else.
It's still the crazy and frantic gameplay you're used to. You can still get lost in the game pretty easily and find yourself dead without much work.
Either way, a great buy and worth the money to expand a weak Wii Library so far (here's hoping Star Wars can solve that too)
For those out there that want to play, my Wii Friend Code for SSB is 4983 4748 0665
See ya online!
