Shared on Tue, 03/25/2008 - 13:32I got back from the gym a few weeks ago and plopped down in front of the TV (w/wife) to get my wind back. It just so happened that it was the 2nd week of Oprah’s Big Give. It was painful and awkward but I didn’t have the energy to get off of the couch. It turns out that by sitting through it I saw one of the funniest/saddest things that I’ve seen in a while.
Let me give you a quick synopsis. Oprah gives a bunch of money to people and then has them decide the best way to give it away. Some people held events or bought equipment for organizations. 3 of the guys actually turned the money into like $60k to give to a children’s home.
Angelo decides to have a benefit dinner at a TGI Friday’s to raise money for a marine home from the war. The manager agrees to give the proceeds of the evening to the marine. Not a huge deal since its all friends and family anyway. At the beginning of the dinner Angelo awkwardly counts out 43 $100 bills to the marine. After dinner Angelo gets a call from Oprah telling him to give away the brand new Ford Edge that the contestants drive around.
This was one of the most awkward/painful moments I’ve seen on television; and this is including the “To Catch A Predator” series.
Angelo brings everyone outside for this big presentation of the car….and gives it to…….. the TGI Friday’s manager/owner! So this marine gets maybe $5000 and the manager drives off in a $35,000 car! You should have seen the look on TGI guys face - it clearly said “Wow, hell ya I’ll take it. Man are you stupid!” The guy had this look of complete disbelief – that the car was given to the wrong person.
