One of my favorite movies of 2007 was “I Am Legend.” I had high expectations for this movie and it didn’t disappoint. Recently I got to see what was the original ending for the movie. (Spoilers may follow)
I’ve found that alternate endings are hit and miss; about half the time I like the theatrical version better. I really liked the theatrical ending to “I Am Legend.” I always dig an ending that involves a heroic victory due to self-sacrifice. However, as much as I enjoyed the theatrical ending, I thought the original ending was much better. It stayed more true to what the book was actually about.
In the theatrical version, Dr. Neville’s “legend” was that he discovered a cure for the virus and sacrificed himself to make sure the cure was delivered to the right people. In the book, Neville is a legend because that’s how the “Darkseekers” view him. Neville is the last of humanity and has become a myth among the zombie like creatures that are left. I felt the original ending eluded to this more then the theatrical version did.
There are some other, little things in the movie that make more sense when you see the original ending (such as why the Darkseeker really came out into the sunlight), but I’m not going to go into all of them here. You’ll just have to rent it and watch if for yourself. If you haven’t seen this movie yet and have one of those 2nd run movie theaters around where you live, do yourself a favor and see it on the big screen. It’s definitely worth it.
8 out of 10
If you have any movies (past or present) you’d like my opinion on, feel free to mention them in the comments section. If I haven’t seen it, then I’ll take it as a recommendation. And no trying to trick me into seeing bad movies! I’ve sat through Manos, The Cars that Eat People, Space Mutiny, and My Best Friend’s Wedding. I can handle anything. (My Best Friend’s Wedding was the worst.)
And now, the babe of the day.
