In my mind I remember them being cutting edge and at the height of technology. Now I look at them and laugh and wonder why I was so impressed. I can actually remember getting excited when my dad bought our very first sound card back in the day. It was amazing to be able to hear the dogs barking in Wolfenstein and hear the soldiers yell "HUT STOP!" I had a few spare minutes today so I went back and looked at some of the titles that brought me into gaming. I realize that doom isn't one of them but I didn't really play it a alot.
Duke Nukem 2
Before there was juicy 3d action there was explosive, exciting, addicting side scrolling action. Like wolfenstein, I only had the shareware version, but when it is so masterfully done who needs a full game?

Blake Stone: Aliens of Gold.
An absolute gem. I was only allowed to play it if I promised my dad that I wouldn't shoot the innocent scientists. Yeah right. Super scary aliens and key card finding action: What's not to like?

Wolfenstein 3D
Not a lot to say here. Who hasn't played this at one time or another. I never owned the whole game, only the first 9 levels. But I wore them out. I can still remember where some of the secret doors are while I watch this vid. I eventually started running and gunning for time; my best ever was 6:37 for all 9 levels.

Duke Nukem 3d
This game changed my life. The life-like graphics blew me away, the weapons were incredible and the gameplay was unmatched. I may go download the shareware again when I'm done with this. I remember tying up the phone line for hours playing this game with a friend across town. Whatever happened to direct dial multiplayer? I think all of you remember the strippers and posters too right? This came out in 1996, so I would have been 15 yrs old getting a chubby off those posters.

Quake 1
This too came out in 1996 I believe. What a great year for gamers! I remember tracking Quake's progress in PC Gamer; drooling over the textures and graphics. The lightning gun was awesome but that nail gun is for NOOBS. On second thought, I think I'll download this instead of Duke.

Quake 2
I'm not even sure where to start on this one. It improved on everything that the first game had started. The overall game play felt tighter and you could really see the "next gen" technology. I lost days to this game during the summer. Again, because of the threats of my parents I could only tie up the phone lines at night. During the day I played against any number of the different bots that I had downloaded. Skins where the shizzy too. I had all the coolest skins: Spider man, cow.....This is the original Halo. Crazy power weapons, power ups, run n gun - the sweetness. I think that I'll download this game instead of quake 1.......

Half Life
Just about everyone has some experience with this game I think. You could almost think of it as the Bioshock of 1998, the story was as unmatched as was it's amazing gameplay and graphics. Gordon Freeman made it possible for scientists to be cool. While I prefer killing people rather than aliens there is no denying the fun factor of this game. Unfortunately I was in college for Half Life 2 and never played it.

This has been a fun little trip down memory lane. I think I just sniffled a little bit remembering the bloody pieces of body from quake II. I think that I'm pleased with where we are in the evolution of shooters right now, and I can't even begin to imagine what's next.
