Muy Thai Kicked My Ass!!!

two blocks down the street from my house is a Ralph Gracie jiu-jitsu place. I've always driven past it wanting to see what they teach and what it would be like. I also wondered if they taught Muy Thai along with jiu-jitsu; well they do. I actually found out about the Muy Thai class from a fellow student. she's been babysitting for one of the employees there and was offered free jiu-jitsu lessons. the cool thing is that they offer two free lessons to let you get a feel for the classes and to see if you'd really want to take them.

well today I took one of those free classes.

now, I haven't done any serious exercising, physical activities or sports in about 4 years. so I thought that I would take it easy and just do the beginning class. well there weren't any different levels of class. right off the bat I get thrown into a mild sparring activity. learning combinations of punches, kicks & blocks. the class is an hour long but after 10 minutes I was feeling light headed and nauseous. you know that feeling of warm saliva building up in the back of your throat, yea that was me. but I battled through it and stuck it out for the entire hour (with a few much needed water breaks in between). overall, I got my ass kicked. my legs are so heavy that I can barely lift them. I have a bruise on my lower right shin from kicking the other guy's shin w/o pads and I can tell that I'll be really sore tomorrow. BUT DAMN IT WAS AWESOME!!!

if anyone was ever interested in taking a Muy Thai class (or any other martial arts form), I highly recommend it. it's more fun than riding a bike at the gym and you learn how to defend yourself; two birds with one stone. :-) so yea, I'll be going back on Saturday morning for my second free class and more physical abuse. :-D

Sweet! I friggin' love Muy Thai! Unfortunately I don't know of any place around here that teaches it, but we do have a place in Birmingham that offers lessons in Shin-Kendo. They will teach you how to use a goddam KATANA. Of course, you start out with a wooden sword for the first few years until you learn not to cut your own arms off. I need to get my ass over there. I like the idea of getting fit while LEARNING something, as opposed to just running in place. Good luck Freak! Try not to break anything vital.

Crane said "I like the idea of getting fit while LEARNING something, as opposed to just running in place." exactly, it's like a Chess match mixed in with everything physical you've ever done in your life. :-D I've done the gym thing before and while there was some nice eye-candy, it was damn boring. I say that you should take at least one of those classes and get a feel for it. it can't hurt (well not for long anyways). :-)

as a former martial artist myself (brown belt in Tang Soo Do) i highly recommend to anyone who has a school nearby to try some classes. yeah, it kicks your ass, but in a great way. it's the one thing i've really missed since moving to the sticks 4 years ago. kudos Freak! it's awesome you have a Gracie school where you live. nothing compares to the kind of workout you get from martial arts, beyond being a full time ninja.

I dropped 28 lbs in 8 weeks of Muay Thai training. I went from a solid 168 lbs. to a ripped 140 lbs. It was ridiculous. The sessions were non stop 2 hour action fests, that left me wanting to puke. Good stuff.

Wow this sounds very cool! One question, did you get a free Mai Tie drink after training???  I know that was week but it was to easy to pass up. I'm old give me a break :D Very cool freak you should write another post after your second class so we can hear about it as well. I hear ya on the Gym thing. I have treadmill in my studio and can only run on it if i put on a movie or TV show I want to watch. I do find running outside more rewarding and if you get into racing and competing in marathons and stuff running can become quite an addictive and productive outlet. I have always been very curious about taking martial arts. The closest i got was taking Ti Chi for a while. Its based on a fighting art but is slowed way down to be more meditative. Best of luck wit it dude. - BAT

Awesome Freak, that is definitely the best way to work out. I see lots of bruised shins and forearms in your future.
