Out of habit I walked by the game rentals, not sure why I do this, I can't remember the last time I've rented a game. GTA IV was there this time though.
I've never played at GTA game before, the demo of Crackdown is as close as I've come. The level of attention that went into this game is incredible. From the city layout, to pedestrian behavior to the radio stations in the car to the myriad of cut scenes...it's just awesome.
So far I've probably got 10 or so hours into the game and I'm about 15% done. I think that the difficulty level is just about right at this point in the game. My problem is that on the way to every mission I get distracted by running over people and destroying cars. Usually that ends up in police chases or death. The driving is still a little challenging, it feels heavy and sloppy, kind of like your mom. The oversteer is a little excessive some times. I was fairly decent at NFS:MW chases rutinely racking up 10-15 million on a chase somehow I don't think that I'll be nearly as productive in this game. The crazy amount of traffic slows you down quite a bit.
I don't remember the last time a game has made me laugh this much though. It's amusing to run a motorcycle into the front of a car while your doing 100mph just to see how far your body flies. And the commentary on the radio is so cynical and filthy and freaking funny, I love it. I wonder if they can update the stations and the commercials when your box is connected to XBL, that would be cool.
This game definately is not for achievement whores. With 10 hours into this I think that I have 2 done. Whoopee. But I'm still exploring the gameplay, when that starts to get a little stale or I run up against some trouble in the missions I may try for some achievements.
I still suck at shooting and driving and pretty much everything. I try to slap a ho and she ends up kicking my ass. How do you dodge punches??? I'm really screwed now. The gun dealer hates me and tries to shoot me and jacob hasn't started selling me guns so I have no way to get my gat.
I may even go out on a limb and try the multiplayer this weekend.
p.s. Thank you to my wife for forgetting to turn the thermostat back on when she left for the week. I love coming back to a 58 degree apartment after a day at work.
