Temptation SUCKS

It's bad enough that we get subjected to a barrage of telemarketers at home, but I have the unfortunate position to get the same here at the office in the form of 'executive recruiters'. Between my resume still lingering on various job search sites from several years ago, to my LinkedIn profile, they seems to be able to find my number without a whole lot of difficulty. Granted, 99% of the time I can listen to them for about 30-seconds, and then blow them off as soon as they either give some info on the position or, more typically, indicate it would include a relocation.

However, I took one today that makes me pause and give some strong consideration. The company in question is Lantheus Medical Imaging, obviously in the medical equipment industry. Like you, I never heard of them so did a little research. Turns out they've been in business for about 50 years as part of Bristol-Myers Squibb, and are considered the industry leader by multiple sources. It's located up north of Boston, which happens to be exactly where my wife hails from, and where our roots are. We'd be within shouting distance of most of her family (for good or bad ). Only questionable bit I found was a recent buy-out of the company by a private equity group. I need to find out why the division was sold off...

The position itself is very attractive; reporting to the CEO the position heads the Quality organization for the company globally with a direct and indirect staff of 60 or so people. Advertised compensation is lucrative, and would amount to upwards of a 40% increase in pay if I ignore my current bonus (21% w/ bonus included). Regardless, a significant amount of money. However, I've already been burned by going for a better position for more money and not doing my homework on the company, culture, etc. The last company I worked for, while granting a good deal more money and a better title absolutely SUCKED ASS as a job. It was easily the worst 9 months of my working life.  All that being said, it still would be the end-all-be-all position I've worked some 15 years towards at this point, and let me know I've really reached my aspirations from a professional level.

Then it comes to the family. I've moved the family around quite a bit to forward my career. We started off in northern MA and spent a solid 8 or so years there. After finishing my MBA, we moved down to NC and spent 3 years there (with a in-state move during that time). Once the job-from-hell thankfully fizzled, it was up to our current location in PA. We've been here about 4 years. My kids have their core group of friends, as does my wife. She's recently been elected the VP of the Home and School Association. We have a nicely developing network of community friends as well.

Finally, my current job rocks. Plain and simple. The company is outstanding - financially, socially, and environmentally (it's part of our core company culture to nurture that 'Triple Bottom Line'). The people I work with, by far and large, are decent people. I have hardcore job security as the most competent of my bosses (head of Quality) direct reports. I'll easily have her job if/when she moves on. The bennies of the company are the best bar none - $30/mo for full family medical/dental, 401k which the company automatically drops 9% of salary into (in lieu of a pension plan), 4 weeks vacation - I'll add a 5th in a year, etc. etc. You get the idea.

So I guess the question is - do I tempt fate and tell the recruiter tomorrow I'll explore the opportunity, or tell him that while it is an exceptional position, in today's current state of affairs - professionally, personally, and from an overall national/global economy standpoint - it's not something I wish to pursue.

UGH!

Your quality of life sounds great as it is. It doesn't appear that the extra money you will get outweighs the life you already have.

As much as I'd say Come to Boston!, you've already got a great thing going on in Philly. Sounds tempting but there's no way to know if you will love it as much as you love your job right now.
