The laptop is an older model one from around 2005. It's a Toshiba Satellite M35X-S161 and you can view the full specs here. For anyone who doesn't feel like looking at the whole spec sheet, the main ones are as follows:
- --1.3GHz Celeron M Processor
- --512 PC2700 RAM
- --15.4" WXGA display
- --60GB Hard Drive
- --DVD/CD-RW optical drive
When I first got it (twas my first laptop and still my only one), it was cool and was pretty quick...almost comparable to the 1.6GHz Pentium 4 desktop I had. But as time went by and more programs and other stuff was added to the laptop, it just seemed sluggish with the background programs and stuff like anti-virus/spyware. When turning it on, I'd hit the power button and leave for 10-15 minutes just so it was ready to go when I got back. Shutdown took a few minutes to complete too.
So...was the $60 spent for more RAM on an aging laptop worth it? The answer is... Hell yeah! Wish I'd have done it sooner! It runs like it got a processor upgrade, everything is faster. Programs load faster and run smoother, start-up takes about 60% of the time it used to and shut-down takes less than a minute! It seems to be a pretty good bang-for-the-buck upgrade. Two thumbs up!
