Bad day at work

Sigh....  What a day.  Today we had 70+ patients to treat.  Normal is 40-45.  Because of the holiday, July 4, we did double duty today.  And, because of that, people had to wait to get treated.  I had a female patient who is not well liked cuz she is rude and nasty to the nurses.  She has a chip on her shoulder and thinks the world revolves around her.  In the infusion area, we are totally unaware of how long someone is waiting.  Sometimes they see the doctor first, so they are there very early.  Then they come up to infusion clinic and perhaps have to wait some more.  But, we don't know anything about that!  All we know is how long they are sitting in our chair.  This patient came to me with nothing done, no blood drawn, no IV started, no vital signs done, etc.  ok, so I did all of that.  She was short with me when I asked her what she was getting this time around.  Whoa, ok!  So, while her labs were "cooking", I was extremely busy with other patients.  She could see that.  But, when it's all about you, it's all about you....  After 10 minutes or so she demanded to know where her stuff was.  I said something appropriate to her.  After another half hour, I suspect pharmacy was a bit backed up what with having to make 70+ chemos and all, but how do you tell that to an irate patient?  To make a long story short, she ended up screaming at me in the hall, in front of several patients, family members, coworkers, that I was stupid, I was ignoring her, and to get my ignorant self away from her and never touch her again.  She stomped off and left with the IV still in her arm.  That is not all she said, but that is the jist of it.  Needless to say, I was insulted and humiliated in front of about 20 people, all of whom were very sympathetic and supportive of my little ignorant self.  And, she made me cry.  That was was the worst.  No one should be so ugly to someone that is there to help them that they make them cry.  That's all.  That was my day.
