I don't know, but if you are going to put in your two weeks notice and it is accepted without question from your employer, you should not take PL time (Personal Leave) unexpectadly in the middle of it. In other words, don't call in Sunday night at 10:21pm on the lab voice mail.
This happened to me just now when I came in to start the lab up for the day. I don't ask much, but I ask people to follow the employee handbook and guidlines to the letter.
As it is, I was very understanding when I was given this persons 2 week notice, even though its supposed to be 3 weeks for technical staff positions. This was the only grace I am willing to give in this manner.
I have two alternatives, the first, I can make this person extend their notice time to the point where they have to work one day extra, so instead of Friday being their last day, I can make them work on Monday as well. Sadly, I am not that big of a jerk. I really should be though, but I look at it this way, it would cause a poison gas of a attitude from thie particular tech and I just rather not deal with it. Also I could forfeit this persons accumulated PL balance check that they would get after they have handed in their tags and keys, its the balance pay off of time that you get when you don't use all your Vacation or personal leave time. For this person this is a total of 131hours....which is a big damn lump sum of money.
My plan is to let this incident just roll off my back. But I am also going to let this person know of the two possibilites they faced, without first telling them that they were possible. This basically comes down to this person being ignorant of their employee guidlines, even though it is his responsibility to know them from his manual.
If you have a work manual, I suggest you make sure you read and UNDERSTAND everything in it, it makes everyone's lives much easier if something should occur, and it will keep you from screwing something up.
This person has been a good employee for the most part for the last two years, which is the only reason I am giving the benefit of my good graces at this point. But this really does use up the bank of "happy" he had built up.
I really dislike Mondays.
On a plus note I did pass the written motorcylce testing portion for my beginers riding course I am taking. Now I have to pass the driving portion and I will get my NYS license waiver sent to me and I will be on my way to legal two wheel happiness.
