Traveling by book
The best part of traveling is not knowing the path ahead, or, where it might lead.
I'm very near the end of my dirty book (aka neither here, nor there) by Bill Bryson, and with that came an overwhelming feeling of reality. I don't want this book to end. It brought me to tears of laughter, outburst of snorts (in public) touches of sadness, shock, amazement, amusement, and surprise. "Neither Here Nor There" is a hilarious story telling ride through Europe.
Brysons words dance around my head, beckoning me to join the odyssey. He's a travelers best friend and a superb writer. He pulls you off the main path. What awaits around the bend is unknown, but for sure there is an adventure to be had. Never again will I look at traveling quite the same.
This book took me places I will never have the pleasure of going, and some I'll NEVER want to. Bryson could tell every minuscule thing he did upon his arrival back home. Just going to the bathroom, ol Bill would make it sound like a wonderful trip just to take a piss.
I've never wanted to meet a celeb before, but I would like to meet this man. I would like to tell him what a pleasure it was to read his books. How I laughed so hard at his moving telling of incidents. Then, I would tell him how I would make a great travel partner when he writes his next travel book. And how I left my book on a plane, spent two days tracking it down...why?...because it was a signed copy. After I told him all this, most likely he would call the police on me....lol
I'm an advocate of "Neither Here Nor There." If you decide to read it, It's my hope it will bring you as much diversionary amusement as it did me. Plain and simple, this book is a masterpiece of travel writing. I highly recommend it.
I also recommend: The Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid. This book is even better. You don't have to be a kid from the fifties to get enjoyment from it. If you don't laugh out loud with this one, have yourself checked out. If you only read one of his books, read Thunderbolt Kid. Oh, you know what they say about Lay's Potato Chips.
Bryson quote: "I killed morons, still do."
Now, if you'll excuse me, it's back to reality....until "A Walk In The Woods"
