Last night my band went in to record another song....took me 1 take, to get my part done.....I could have done another and done a little better....but to be honest with you.....I didn't care.....not that I dont want to do my best, or have my best recorded.....but with this band I just dont really have the motivation or drive to do any better.  I really dont have any say as to what's goin on, they are constantly changing the songs up, one of the guitarist's cant play what the other guitarist play, so he play's different shit.....which he cant play either......the vocals in the new song seem out of time and sloppily done.....the bass parts are weak......any who

After I got done I packed my shit up, and hung out while Greg got frustrated with the guitarist's because they couldn't do their parts right....so Durty and I left, then I went out with a couple of buddies and shot pool.

So today I was checking all my myspaces, and noticed that the band put up the new song already, I gave it a listen and got pissed because its obviosly a rough 1st mix, and I emailed the "leader" and asked why we couldnt have waited for the final mix to put it up, and he says as far as he knew that was the final, they liked how it all sounded, blah blah blah....to which I responded back telling him my opinion which is..... one guitar is louder than the other, the drums are muffled, and the vocals seem in the background in some parts, and too much in other parts, and right before the first chorus, the volume fluctuates .....and the end doesnt fade out like we discussed.

I went to Greg's house, he's the guy who own's an in-house studio, and personal friend, to talk to him about it all, but he wasn't home.  So I guess I'll just have to wait to see what happens......So go give it a listen, see if you agree with me or disagree with me, or have your own beefs with it, bring it on!!!

".... one guitar is louder than the other, the drums are muffled, and the vocals seem in the background in some parts, and too much in other parts, and right before the first chorus, the volume fluctuates .....and the end doesnt fade out like we discussed." Couldn't have said it better. The mix is super rough but could be fixed. It's clear that you have more skills than the other band members and would be even more clear with a proper mix so........... Kinda like the TONE of the guitars even if the performance is a bit rough but for what it is, Good stuff. My band has dissolved and I envy you. When we were an actual working band, That was the most fun I've ever had in my life. Rock On!

I used to PA in the past, so I can say with some confidence (I'm not a professional soundguy), that the mix sounds unfinished. If not for reading your blog first I would have believed that you guys recorded on sub-standard gear, shrugged and left it at that. That said, bands that play any kind of metal are the hardest to line out. If a soundguy is lucky the band is song, 1 guitar, 1 bass, 1 drummer with twinkick. From what I hear, I didn't check out your page completely, Evelynn consists out of a singer who is ruining his voice. Whether it's the mix or the singer I don't know, but it isn't his tone of voice normally. It doesn't sound like he's in his spot at all. I'm not a fan of bands where the singer is working to sing, especially in metalbands the singer should be singing like he's at home, the rest should be show. (Look at me singing from my toes up, kinda) With his tone, it's easy for the band to drown him, reducing him to mere sound where becomes unintelligable for half the show (if lucky). To be honest, I line out twin-guitar bands with one guitar as master. All it takes is listening to the band and then you can make out which guitarist should be a bit louder than the other one. (usually the guy who's the set-piece gets to be louder.) Bass gets to be a wee bit louder than the kick... "I can hear you!" Satisfies most of the bassists I have met. (if all else fails, overdo it on his stage-monitor, he'll be happy as a puppy). Even though I'm partial to Bass and Percussion, I don't think the bass should be overbearing, as it's easy for a soundguy to have a show be about the bassist. Drums are a nightmare to line out. with a bit of bad luck you enter the soundcheck with a pumped drummer hitting the shit out of his kit for an hour while the soundguy locks the dail. "Give me a roundabout" gets the drummer hitting everything in 30 seconds, or he goes on like forever... I usually lined a kit out with one hand on my Qu'Ran, and hoping for the best. Anyway, during the show they usually play *less loud* then they did during soundcheck, which means that a soundguy is forced to line-out on the fly. In the worst case, as the drummer tends to play with less amplitude during a show as opposed to the soundcheck, the kit has lost the drive. (This is where a soundguy gets ready to be murdered, or to commit suicide) Thanks to the drums, audience can get the feeling they're in a train that can't be stopped anymore (if you get what I'm trying to say here), and that's due to the drive coming from the kick. (along with other units that make out the kit). Without the drive, it's just drums, but the manmade amplitude plays a big part. (For an example of drive, listen to "Leave me Breathless" by the Corrs. The kit blows you away in that song, awesome stuff.) In essence, having listened to the song five times to be fair... Get rid of the singer. Obvious. Unless you guys want to sound like this, of course or he was trusted upon the band in a package-deal. (free strings if you take the music-store manager's son on as singer) I can't see him finishing 3 sets of 30 minutes at least. Guitars are impossible to make out individually, it's just a wall of sound. Nothing that can't be fixed, but if the band feels this is the final version, someone's ego in the band is overbearing the guitarists. As I said, if you can fool the bassist in believing he's as loud as the drums, then point for you. But do you guys even have a bassist? If you have, the drums win. Drums miss drive, and topside is way louder than the kick (hence the absence of drive), if the band wants that sound, get an echo to be the kick, saves you from wearing your legs out. Echo's are cheap nowadays. So, unbalanced mix favoring the singer, who is, frankly, rather tragic.

BTW, do you own "Decade of Aggression" by Slayer? That soundstage will open your eyes. I'm still waiting for metal-bands playing live to achieve that level of clarity. Unequalled deathmetal soundstage recording, setting a new standard for soundcrews world-wide.

I agree. Good song in principle, but the recording needs cleared up a BUNCH.
