So, our puppy (Maci) is now appx. 10 months old, and last month, I scheduled her to be spayed today.

We had told our daughter a month ago or so that we were going to do this, and she was worried then, but had forgotten about it until last night.

I struggled with whether I should tell her or not last night. I decided I should, so when she and her mom were reading books just before bed, I went in and told her that Maci would be going to the Vet tomorrow to be fixed.

Bad decision. My daughter bawled her head off for at least 10 minutes. She's truly worried that something bad will happen to Maci, so my wife and I spent the better part of 30 minutes calming her down and reassuring her that Maci would be ok.

My daughter is an only child, and Maci is basically her best friend. I may be the "Alpha Male" of the house, and the one that Maci obeys and listens to the most, but Cati and Maci have a special bond that only a child and a puppy can have. The two are inseperable.

Her concern also goes back to Kaycee, our Yellow Lab that we had, that died about 3 years ago unexpectedly. She doesn't want to lose another pet / friend, and I can't blame her. Even now, she still comments occasionally that she still misses Kaycee.

Anyways, the Vet called about 30 min. ago and Maci is "asleep" and they are prepping her for the surgery. Unfortunately, they discovered that Maci had an ear infection, and a skin condition that could be a special type of Mange.

So, the costs of this visit continue to climb. Surgery, booster shot, heart worm pills, skin scraping for mange test, ear flushing & medicine for infection. What started out as a $160 surgery is fast climbing to something that'll probably cost around $300. Yuck. But, she's family.
