A minute or so later I get "Lost connection with PC". WTF? I try it again, and get the same error. I had to get ready and go to work so I had to give up until tonight.
I THINK I know what the error is, the PC with the streaming app, Orb is my laptop and it is wireless. I think the wireless cannot stream it fast enough. It has to get the file from the NAS, then stream it wirelessly to the xbox via the router. Tonight I'll wire the laptop directly into the router to see if that helps. Fucking Microsoft and their insistance of having the freakin' PC stream the media instead of letting any certified device do it. MORONS I tell you, MORONS!
Speaking of morons, they also shoot themselves in the foot with the music streaming. I was able to find my music on the NAS just fine but my display choices are Artist, Album,Genre,Song,Playlist. That doesn't help me one bit. My music is organized in directories, My music is in one directory, my wife's music in another, my kids in a couple of more. There is NO support to view the music by directory! I guess I can create a playlist based on the songs in each directory but then I'd have to update that playlist whenever I add a new song! Stupid, stupid, stupid! Don't they test this shit with regular people first????
I'm this close to taking the suggestion of a couple clanmates who suggested just build a cheap dedicated media center PC.
I've bitched enough about the short comings of the Xbox 360 and media sharing for now. I'm going to try to borrow my brother in law's PS3 and see how it works over the weekend and blog about my results.
