Internet Sales Tax...

I remember discussing this some months back (in Off Topic I believe) and many people saying it couldn't happen...well, it looks like it's getting closer. This will affect downloadable merchandise as well, IE: ITunes, Xbox, etc.

How in the world are they going to make this manageable? 50 states, tens of thousands of cities, counties, and other random tax areas....it's going to be insane. When I worked for one company I had to input the tax codes for only 6 states (Missouri, California, Texas, Washington, Illinois and Georgia ) and all of the counties, cities, and other tax areas for each state into our computer system...it took me weeks....I can't imagine doing all 50. Each company would have to register to collect tax in all states, there would be ridiculous amounts of paper work, time and manpower to put it into operation....it just seems crazy to me. Hopefully it won't go through...but since I have lost almost all faith in the common sense of our leaders, it probably will.

I could see WHY they would want to. But the HOW is rediculous. After seeing the CPSIA laws passed this year though I dont think they ever consider the HOW.

taxation of goods isn't determined by the state the business operates in, as opposed to where the goods are sold? The only time I could see where location would matter is on international sales, on which you wouldn't charge a sales tax. \r I dislike consumption taxes. /headache

Taxes on this stuff would suck an now would a normal 800 point game be raised to 1200 to offset sales tax?

I thought I read that trying to maintain taxes for each state would be to difficult so they would implement a nationwide sales tax to internet purchase and such. Anyway they do it.... it SUCKS!!!

The flip side to this is that many states are losing millions or billions of dollars annually to out of state companies due to internet sales. These taxes from these sales could help fund schools and many other needed public services. Lord knows the education system here in FL sucks and could use all the help it can get. My wife is a teacher and they are being subjected to a 2% decrease in salary and are facing larger class sizes in fall because of many layoffs.
