Living in a College Town

Tomorrow all clinics at UNC hospital are closing at noon.  Why?  Because UNC is playing, um, whoever, for the very first time on a Thursday.  Football!  College Football!  They are expecting 60,000 people to pile into Chapel Hill starting early in the day for a game that starts at 8:00 in the evening.  I guess I just don't understand, not being a fan of any kind of sport.  No, they are not closing clinics so we can go to the game.  D'oh.  They are closing so that patients can, hopefully, beat the traffic jam.  Not us.  We have to stay and complete our infusions, which will likely put most of us right in the middle of everything.  They are even running more buses to accomodate the influx of people (and me to escape!).  If it is as bad as they say it will be tomorrow, my only desire is to get the heck out of Dodge.

I don't know about other college towns, but Chapel Hill has a way of going stark raving mad over things like sports and special occasions.  Halloween is coming soon.  There will be a crowd of strangely dressed ghosts, goblins, monsters, etc. that would scare the likes of me far, far away.  It is a huge street party, every year, and most of the time it comes off pretty well.  There are cops everywhere trying to keep drinking under control and other mischief that occurs.  I hear it's wall to wall bodies and goes on most of the night.  I now live close enuf that I can sometimes hear noisy celebrations happening on campus.  It will surely be a fun night for many.  I will be hiding in my cave.  I'm scared of ghosts, goblins and monsters!

I know the feeling. Living as close to Hershey Park as we do, we have to pay attention to the concert scheduel to make sure we're not leaving the house on the day of a big concert or event. and we even have to be careful going to work on days when there's a Penn State game, that can cause traffic jams up to 100 miles away from Happy Valley

Ann Arbor becomes one big tailgate party on game days when over 100,000 show up for the game. It still amazes me that a golf course allows people to park on it.

Damn right! I'll be pulling into town early to play Finley before showering up and heading to Franklin. I will be doing my part to help with congestion by walking to and from the game. Seriously, though, this is the biggest game in Chapel Thrill since FSU came to town in '96. And, yes, it is college football. And, yes, you live in one of the greatest cities in the world. And, no, I have not been this excited about a trip to Chapel Hill since I was first dropped off at Lewis Dorm so many years ago. But, I certainly appreciate you letting us stark raving mad fans come in on a Thursday night. Halloween on Franklin is nothing short of a spectacle. Not my scene anymore... but, fun the first 4 times.
