The most popular games I've played this year..

  • Halo 3
  • Rainbow Six 2
  • Forza 3
  • Uncharted 2
  • Rock Band 2 and Lego: RB
  • Modern Warfare 2
  • Left 4 Dead 2
  •

There's probably a couple more I'm forgetting but do you see the trend there? When in the hell are we finally going to get a new game that breaks through the same old same old. Game developers just keep pushing shinier versions of the same things we've been playing for 2-6 years and what's worse is we keep buying. If we're honest, there's nothing really radically different about v. 1 and v.2 of {insert AAA title here}.

If I think back over the last 4 years, the most interesting games I've played were Chromehounds and Shadowrun. Both achieved some success but there was little support for either and the longevity of both was affected by that. The problem I have now is that when "Shiny New Version of The Same Game You've Been Playing for 3 Years" comes out, it is exciting and it's fun to play......for about 2 weeks. Then it hits you that you're playing the same damn thing that's been in your machine for years.

Guess what? It's not getting any better. The list of most anticipated titles for next year....

  • Bioshock 2
  • God of War 3
  • Mass Effect 2
  • Diablo 3
  • Gears of War 3
  • Crackdown 2
  • Halo: Reach
  •

Honestly I find myself wondering if I'll stop gaming just out of boredom before much longer. I'm sure there's games out there that are "different" and would be worth my time to look at. The real problem is this. Thanks to this site I've built a base of friends that I love to play with and there's no real chance that they will all be willing to take that leap outside the comfort zone with me. So my choice is to continue playing the same old games with guys I really enjoy, or move on to a new game on my own. Neither are all that appealing right now.

sigh.

In other news....

If you haven't checked out the new ABC comedy "Modern Family", you're missing out. It's probably one of the funniest new shows I've seen in a long time.

Video game companies are not going to spend on new IP and concepts at this particular junction in time if they have sure fire sellers that will require less funding to give some new features to. As for me, I don't have a problem with gameplay I have been playing for 3+ years. I may take a break from it from time to time but then I play it again and it reminds me why I liked it in the first place. To each his own I guess.

I call foul! I think you have worked yourself into a self-fufilling situation. You are a self-professed "social gamer". You admit to only playing games the MP games that your friends are. This limits your library of games significantly. In the past year I have experienced a lot of great new games: L4D - new at the time. Bioshock (yes 2 is coming out but 1 was truly unique). Little Big Planet - nothing like it IMO Batman Arkham Asylum - outstanding game with some unique gameplay elements Metal Gear Solid 4 (yes it is a 4, but they keep reinventing it and it was new to me). As far as on the horizon: Alan Wake Rain

Hollywood has stooped to remaking "Alvin and the Chipmunks". There is nothing original anymore. Personally, I'm waiting for "Johnny Quest, the Movie."
