Fable III Released Periodically...

…And sporadically draining your wallet in the process. Lionhead’s Peter Molyneux thinks it will be a great idea to sell the next chapter in the very successful Xbox RPG series, Fable, in chapters. The reason he is doing this? Well, isn’t it blatantly obvious? Money! Apparently, Mr. Molyneux believes that the game needs to reach sales of $150 million, or the game will, in his words, “wither” away.

Lionhead plans to release Fable III and will “give” away the first chapter for “free”. Mr. Molyneux said, ““We give away the first chapter entirely free, the first hour. When you reach a certain point in the game it says 'thank you for playing the pilot of Fable 3, do you want to spend an extra 2-5 or whatever dollars to buy the next episode, or buy the whole lot?' Press 'yes' and you will immediately continue playing.” Awesome, so after I buy the game for $60 I get to play the first chapter for “free”. Man, aren’t they generous!

He also said, “…because if a franchise doesn’t reach that level it will inevitably wither.” Well, I don’t know about you guys and gals, but I still play the original Fable on my Xbox and occasionally throw in Fable II to appease my RPG appetite. Granted, I understand that building these very graphical games come at a hefty price, but make the game good and people will buy it. However, after reading about this, I won’t even consider buying the next chapter if it’s going to cost me $60 plus.

I really hope this isn’t the next chapter in gaming where developers start selling half assed games on disk and charging for the rest of the game for me to finish. This is ridiculous and just plain greedy. Make an excellent game and the money will flow, if not expect slow sales. It’s not rocket science, or is it? Fable is an awesome game and I enjoy playing it, but it’s greedy attitudes like this that will keep me away from buying anymore of the Fable series, or any other series that decides to follow this dark path. Do you hear me Call of Duty and Activision?

My understanding is that you have to buy the game disk and then buy additional chapters. If that is the case, I'm not buying any more Fable games, period. However, if what you are saying is correct and I buy everything that will equal to $60, or maybe even a little more, then I would definitely continue with this franchise.

If I had this option on Fable 2, I would not have bought many chapters. Maybe the first couple and that is it. The game simply didn't interest me enough, and I love RPGs.

I don't think you understand the episodic release. You can go to the game store of your choice and buy the whole game for your $60 or $80 for the LE version. OR you can download the 1st episode of the game for free and buy the remaining chapters for the game. It's not additional gaming not on the disc. It's the same game, just in downloadable form, broken into chapters. The chapters are probably priced to total $60 t over the story, as they are able to cut out the physical media and thus make a greater profit. Think of it as buying a PSP Go game though, no trade in once you complete the game, but you can also play at less cost to you, if you don't like the whole game.
