Yeah, I seem to be incapable of getting anything correct without trial and error. I've always been like this but it seems to be getting worse with age.
After careful measuring, using the 1x2x4 block as a ruler, I determined a circle size in REACH that is equivalent to Stonehenge's diameter of 108 feet. I believe I got it aced but I thought it was the inside diameter. Therefore I placed the blocks on the outside. After completing one half of the circle of 30 stones (orthostats) I counted 17. Ultimately a full circle would have 4 more than required. What is going on?
This picture shows a respawn area, the latest ring failure and the new play surface. Just for kicks I'll mention that after much further testing, Coliseum Walls cannot be laid flat. In fact they seem to have a completely random way of saving a final rotation. Actually, testing revealed one potential consistency. Unfortunately it is only useful for rotations in one direction, not two. The beauty of REACH Forge is that I can actually remove the playing surface and rebuild it anytime. I've been putting it in to get my creative juices flowing.
Back to the outer ring. So now I am experimenting again with the final ring diameter. Apparently it's not as simple as moving the rocks to align with the inside of the previously determined ring. It's close, but no cigar. In the next picture you see a rectangular respawn area set at increments of 12 degrees and a length that positions the orthostats at what should have been the proper distance from the centre. The beauty of this potential solution is that I'll be able to place 2 orthostats at a time on opposite sides of the outer ring.
This picture shows there is more than one metre between these orthostats. The smaller block in the middle is my 1 metre block measure. Apparently this means I have to move the orthostats even closer to the centre. More verification required.
Scale is worth mentioning. The real world Stonehenge outer ring being 108 feet across and 13 to 16 feet high is not big enough to play a scaled battle in REACH. It's a short stones throw across. It would be barely big enough to be a team base. Lucky for me the objects in REACH are scaling up the construction to approximately three times the natural scale. A Spartan III is at around 7 feet tall. This picture shows how small a Spartan is compared to a orthostat.
Experienced Forgers may guess what is going on in this picture. The grid and the blocks next to them are datum blocks used to align and control other blocks used in construction. These were an absolute must in Halo 3 but are less important in REACH. They have their uses though.
