First Impression Quickie: Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's Decade Duels

Foremost, you must be a fan of Yu-Gi-Oh! or desire to learn to play the game in order for this Arcade title to be appealing. Considering that I started collecting the cards at Metal Raiders, and have collection book-valued at >$5,000, I would say I rather enjoy the game. Let me break it down:

Yu-Gi-Oh is a strategy based card game, basically similar to Magic and Pokemon. You have a restricted playing field so the game has it's boundries. In all basics, Yu-Gi-Oh is a game where opponents attempt to reduce each other's "Life Points" to zero by: battling monsters, initiating traps, and activating spells. Because of the sheer evolution of the gameplay, it is impossible to explain the exact mechanics in detail without quoting a rulebook. Blah blah snore, moving on.

Let's assume you know how to play it or are willing to learn. This Arcade title puts you in the same action as the actual card game. Same rules (as of current), same cards, same gameplay. It holds better than YGO Dawn of Destiny (original Xbox game). There are the new Synchro Monsters here, as well.

The drawback is the gameplay happens very rapidly. If you are unfamiliar with a card's effect, you don't get the chance to read it over unless you are able to chain effects during the throwdown. This annoys me considering I haven't seen many of the new effect cards, and my physical collection doesn't see gameplay anymore. If you are able to get past this one speedbump, you have one great game to play.

Coin toss says: Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's Decade Duels is definately made for the avid YGO card player. When this title was announced, I was mad that it didn't see it first street date. Now I'm glad they took the time to fix whatever was wrong and bring out a solid game.

Will I buy it? Probably so, just not right now. 800 MSP is a very nice price for the sheer replay value of this game. I'm just too lethargic to take time to learn the new cards and effects. I <3 traditional format.
