The neighbors banded together to clear the road of most of the ice on our fair little section of the street. Shovels were lent, rock salt was poured on driving areas that were not my own. Kitty litter was offered to sprinkle the ground, so that none of us would suffer a nasty spill. It was like a 60's protest song, or at least how I envision one to be, all we were missing was some free love and babies walking around sans diaper. Democrat working with Republican, no mention of Lucky, the black lab, who likes to crap in my yard. All was right with the world.
I decided to venture out, as I was down to 22 cigarettes. While my section of the subdivision was as smooth as the parquet floor at Boston Garden, the other roads in the subdivision were like an arctic 3rd world country. I then ventured out to a sort of main street, and found conditions to be less hospitable. Sheets of ice lined the road. Treacherous conditions, which resulted in my car, and many others sliding around at times. I don't think my speed got above 20 mph. Made it to the grocery and decided to treat myself to some sushi, and a nice turkey breast, which will spend tomorrow in a crock pot. I happily got into line, the cigarette line, and waited my turn. I got up and asked for, and received my carton. Headed back to the car. All was right with the world.
I drove the 2 miles home, ever so vigiliantly. A few minor slides, but no real sense of impending doom. Just taking my time, driving very cautiously. I made it home without a hitch. It sure was nice to do that last little bit on a clean and ice free road. All was right with the world.
2 cigarettes later, I was in need of a new pack, so I decided to dive into my new carton. Certainly, one that required that much danger to procure would certainly taste just a bit sweeter. I gingerly opened the carton, as if it were a pack of 1978 Topps baseball cards. What's this? I glance at the pack. A soft pack?
