Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith Xbox Video Game was released on 5/5/05. If you’ve played the previous Episode games you know the games generally follow the movie. So, depending on what you wanted or did not want to know about the movie played a factor in buying this game; that is if you are a hardcore Star Wars fan. I was one of those that did not want to know, so I waited until after I saw the movie, four times, before buying this game. I’m glad I did as I felt the game probably would’ve ruined the movie for me.
This review will contain spoilers for the movie and some spoilers for the game; I won’t give away everything in the game. With that, I’ll give you a shortened opinion about the game for those that haven’t seen the movie or don’t like spoilers for games. If you’re a true Star Wars fan and you haven’t seen the movie or played this game yet, you are now required to give your name and place of residency to Ebola. Ebola will ensure an empty Mike James Jack Daniels bottle is broken over your skull.
Overall the game was good. There is a single and multiplayer mode (not LIVE enabled, i.e. you can’t play online). The multiplayer mode has two modes, coop and duel. You actually have to play the single player mode to unlock the multiplayer coop. Even then, there are only 4 missions in coop mode. You also have to play the single player mode to unlock more saber duelist for the duel mode. I do not recommend paying full price for the game. Find it on sale. If you don’t intend on playing the game much after you’ve finished it, rent it. The game only takes about 10 hours to complete. If you do rent it, do a search for the cheat codes to unlock everything, that way you can at least experience everything before you return the game. I actually intend on keeping it because my son and I have a good time doing the saber battles in multiplayer, just because the light sabers clashing sounds kickass and there are a couple of “surprise” duelist.
As a Jedi you gain experience as you play the game. The more times you can take out an enemy without them inflicting damage on you, the more “impressive” you’ll be. This allows you to gain more points to select better Force skills such as healing (very key), saber throw, force throw, force grab, and force push. You can also increase your Jedi abilities with various Force Attacks. This gives you certain combos you can pull by pressing certain keys in order, yea like my old ass is going to remember to press L->X+Y+X+X+Y+BR->L to pull off some bad ass attack. I just mashed my keys the entire game, did some killer move, and then never repeated it because I’m just mashing keys! That’s one of the things I didn’t like about the game, the key combos were too long in most cases. It didn’t really hinder me though, mashing keys and force healing got me through the game. As you play the game, you unlock more features. One of my favorite features is the concept art, and man is some of this stuff awesome. I need to figure out how to do high quality video capturing, because this concept art is some of the best Star Wars stuff I’ve seen. You also get actual SWE3:ROTH movie footage which you can replay, so now you’ll know how the movie will look on your TV when the DVD comes out.

The game followed the movie with a few exceptions. It left out the love story, so you don’t really get the Anakin turning to the dark side because he’s trying to save Padmé, the game makes it look like he’s turning to the dark side for the sole reason he thinks the Jedi are betraying the Republic. This is determined by the scene where Mace Windu is about to kill Darth Sidious and Anakin comes in. Instead of Anakin cutting off Windu’s hand and Darth Sidious killing him, Anakin and Windu go at it and it is Anakin that kills Windu, turning him to the dark side. I found Mace Windu to be the most difficult “boss” to defeat.
Throughout the game you are either Anakin or Obi-Wan. As I said before, you gain experience points base on how well you do in battle, so this allows you to power up your Force powers. Remember what you use for each character because you’ll need it as you go through the game. I recommend powering up on Force Heal first. For Obi-Wan, I recommend Force Stun and Jump Attacks; for Anakin, Force Grasp and Critical Attacks. Obi-Wan will need Force Stun to trick Clone Troopers into fighting for him later in the game (Clone Troopers of course eventually turn against the Jedi). The first “boss” is Count Dooku. You’ll be Anakin and at first it is Obi-Wan and Anakin vs. Dooku, but eventually it will be Anakin vs. Dooku. The second “boss” is Obi-Wan vs. General Grievous. The third “boss” is Anakin vs. Mace Windu. The fourth “boss” is Obi-Wan vs. a Clone Ship. The fifth “boss” is Anakin vs. woman Padawan (can’t remember her name) and immediately afterwards her Jedi Master (can’t remember his name). The sixth boss is Anakin vs. a Separatist ship. The seventh “boss” is Obi-Wan vs. Anakin, you are Obi-Wan. This one ends the game when you defeat Anakin just as in the movie. This victory unlocks an alternate ending where it is you playing as Anakin vs. Obi-Wan. The alternate ending is pretty good and actually makes you ask more questions on the “what if” scenario.
As you defeat each Jedi “boss”, their character is unlocked for dueling. You also open more arenas as you complete the game. When you complete the alternate ending level, you unlock two very special duelists and a special arena, Darth Vader in full black suit and helmet and Ben Kenobi. That’s right; you can play out the Episode IV: New Hope battle between Darth Vader and Obi-Wan “Ben” Kenobi on the Death Star. I about shit myself when I unlocked this. I thought I would unlock Yoda and Darth Sidious to battle in the Senate, but Vader and old Ben on the Death Star was a nice surprise. Old Ben talks some smack too, plus he’s the best duelist in my opinion. At least my son can’t beat me when I’m him. Having Ben fight the young Anakin, or Ben vs. the young Obi-Wan, Vader vs. Anakin, oh my fucking god, the battles you can have!
There are 4 additional single player challenges that are unlocked as you go. The first is you playing as one of General Grievous’s guards vs. Clone Troopers. The second one I think it''s you playing as General Grievous, not sure, didn’t play it. The third is you as Yoda vs. Clone Assassin Troopers (very nasty guys). I believe the fourth is you as Darth Vader, not sure as I haven’t played it yet.
Overall, a good game worth renting or picking up on sale as it really isn’t worth $50.
