The common snow plow (Commune Aratrum Nix) is a species of plow in North America named for its large frontal metal blade. These blades can weigh up to 600 pounds (273 kg), while the snow plows themselves weigh up to well over 13,000 pounds (5,897 kg). Recent genetic testing indicates that there are three distinct subspecies of Commune Aratrum Nix, one of which is endangered: Commune Aratrum Nix Sierrae. Snow plows originally crossed to North America over the Bering land bridge from Siberia: the population in North America peaked in the millions, and the snow plows entered into the mythology of the Native Americans. However, by 1900 the population had crashed to several thousand. Conservation efforts (in part by the Boy Scouts) have restored the population.
