Blame Jones

Working in a  shipping department has always been a thankless job. The company I work for sends out worldwide e-mails if a sales guy lands a new account or if R&D has developed a new product that will "revolutionize the industry", but the day to day  efforts of the shipping department of any company goes largely unnoticed...until something goes wrong. I work for a company that manufactures golf shafts and we received a new part # for one of our biggest customers: P10360A395TFC189I11, which is almost identical to an existing part #:  P10360A395TFC169I11. This is an 18 digit alphanumeric sequence with only one digit difference...guess what happened. Yep, I sent the wrong shit. However, despite receiving a nearly identical part number with no warning I am expected to notice that one digit is different. I now must suffer the indignity of a meeting with the Vice President to formulate a plan to prevent a mis-shipment in the future. Here's the idea I'm taking to the meeting: change the fucking part numbers so that they are readily distinguishable. My attention to detail only goes so far. Maybe I'll still have a job when it's all said and done, but I will definitely make an impression.

It's one thing to pop this up and see it immediately, another to try it 8 friggin hours a day.

We  have 11 digit aplha numeric and 6 digits are the actual serial number, the rest is a date/location code, it's no where near as ungainly as that thing. Looks like the first 13 identical digits are mostly irrelevent.

Blame Jamison.

The P10360As are senior shafts...I'm considering something stiffer like a P11061STFC189FW11, or perhaps a P11061 STFC169FW11: a good, stiff fairway wood.
