Nintendo has renamed the 7th generation console "Revolution" to "Wii" in hopes that it will symbolize their answer to next-generation console questions.
"While the code-name ‘Revolution’ expressed our direction, Wii represents the answer." - revolution.nintendo.com
The new console name, spoken as "we", emphasizes gaming as a group, everyone, not just a single gamer in front of the glowing tube. Nintendo has put the focus on revolutionizing the console industry by focusing on the gaming community rather then pushing a console with a single focus.
Not only does Wii become a Nintendo symbol, but it also is easy for the general public to remember and pronounce. The marketing catch-phrases based on "Wii" are nearly limitless which frees them from the number scheme that Microsoft and Sony focus on.
This is not just "part 3" or "part 360"; this is a new generation of console gaming and with that new generation comes change. Change is good. Perhaps the first game we'll see is "Mario Wii" or "Zelda Wii" or maybe they will change the old school gaming names as they have with old school console names. Nobody cares if you are 128-bit, 16-bit, or Nintendo 64 (bit) anymore.
The gamer community wants a cheap console solution with great new games, nostalgic classic games, and an innovated design that can tip the game industry on its side. First Nintendo designs a game controller unlike anything we have ever seen in the industry, and now they break the paradigm of console naming.
Wii will have to wait and see what Nintendo's next revolutionary move will be…
