PlayStation 3: 700,000 units

The PlayStation 3 will have roughly 700,000 units per major territory, production has yet to start. Register your Ebay accounts now and stretch your wallet.

Sony Amercias Computer Entertainment President, Kaz Hirai estimates 700,000 per major territory. Yes, the US is a major territory. So what can we expect?

Hirai:
"Unfortunately, I think it's going to be very much of a challenge to be able to meet every single unit demand that's out there in the market."
Well, that is a severe understatement. Sony boasts the biggest population of fanboys across the world and they're not going to come close to meeting the demands of half of them... not even those with rich parents.

Hirai goes on to say:
"Unless we suddenly say, 'Well we want to wait until June of next year to launch because we want to stockpile product,' I don't think that's the approach we want to take."
Is it safe to assume that everyone will be scrambling to get a PS3 until June of 2007? That is about when Microsoft Xbox 360's became a readily available product, no?
