Apparently, Sony is coming up short on developer kits leaving software developers with very few resources. One developer reports a single kit, a non-PS3 controller, and a dream...
Some developer is whispering in the ear of Kotaku and letting them know the status of the PlayStation 3 from a programmers standpoint.
This developer claims to have a single PlayStation 3 developer kit, a single dual shock 2 controller without the tilting/gyro PS3 controller technology seen at E3. The developer kit is said to be very complicated to use specifically when firmware upgrades are needed.
Given the shortage on actual PlayStation 3 consoles reported by Sony, it should come as no surprise that developers are also feeling the pain. However, without 3rd-party support from many studios, both small and large, Sony's launch titles and spring titles could be at risk. A single development group will find it challenging to build and test on a small set of kits.
How this will impact game review sites such as IGN is still unknown. Many high profile magazine sites require games and dev-consoles as early as possible to start writing reviews. Magazine publications can take months from start to finish so a head-start on reviews is required.
At this rate, it seems that finding a console will be difficult, getting new released games out the door will be a challenge and reading great reviews ahead of release could be scarce.
