It was originally stated that the Nintendo Wii was going to be region free, which would allow gamers to import games from all over the world. Not only games, but gamers have pre-ordered the Wii from places like Lik-Sang hoping to work around the early pre-order sellouts at Amazon and other US retailers.
Well, if you are one of those folks, prepare to cancel that pre-order. Unless, of course, you plan on importing all your titles from some Asian regions.

Even Nintendo's VP of marketing once said there was a software switch to enable/disable region checking and signs pointed to Nintendo disabling this region code. Well, that's not true, and if there is indeed a switch that means 3rd parties may follow Nintendo's lead and also use region locking.
For those hoping to import titles from Japan to get games early - hope this doesn't ruin your dreams.
