The console is not released yet, but a patch will be ready for you upon connecting to Sony's online services.
Ok, it is obvious what you're thinking "omg, a patch on day 1?" - but it seems this patch enables all online services and features on their network.
Sony's online network is an open system without any service charges. More than likely, this is the method Sony used to lock out demo/reviewer models from being useful online. Rather then ship a box that's been handicapped Sony may have just limited all shipments to base level functionality until they publish the patch.
So, if you do get your hands on a PS3 this holiday, prepare for a patch which will make your PS3 a useful networking machine.
