A few gamers (two to be precise) have experienced some Wii breakdowns, not too surprising for a new hardware launch. However, Nintendo is usually fairly stable on the hardware front.
These two gamers sent in e-mails to Kotaku updating them on the issue. Apparently one of the writers was able to contact Nintendo and have their problem handled (with a hardware exchange of course).
It is expected that a few gamers will bring home lemons on launch day for both the Wii and PlayStation 3. Nintendo has launch numbers on their side, however, and can probably ship gamers replacement systems in short order. It is assumed, with the PlayStation 3's limited launch, we may see delays in shipment to existing customers. Like Microsoft it is also assumed that Sony will be prioritizing existing customers over new customers, sending out new systems to those that already have them over stocking local store shelves.
For the customers sake, we hope the console fatalities will be minimal. Many gamers sat outside in the freezing cold hoping to get their hands on either of these systems. It would be tragic to bring it home and find out it barely functions.
