nintendowiifanboy talked with Ben Herman, who runs SNK Playmore USA, where they mentioned Wii online games:
"Of course, there has to be bad news, and it's kind of big: Herman says that Nintendo is not letting publishers add online functionality to games, VC or retail, and probably will continue this restriction throughout 2007."
Before you let loose the dogs of war, please note that Ben Herman isn't a Nintendo spokesperson so what he says may or may not be Nintendo's final decisions. However, it is good to note that a third party person with no ties to the Nintendo product (besides games) has given his interpretation of the "rules" as set by Nintendo.
Why would Nintendo prevent titles from going "online" this year? Perhaps their online solution is not yet ready or capable of handling the user base? Recall, the Wii was slightly more in demand than even Nintendo could have predicted.
Question remains, will a current-generation console survive without the infamous multi-player aspect? We're sure 2old2play has a big opinion of this given the communities entire focus is to bring gamers together for online play.
