The merchandising machine is in full gear for the impending Halo 3 release by Microsoft Game Studios.
As one would expect, Mad Catz has jumped on the bandwagon. They’re one of the most popular 3rd party accessory manufacturers out there and have release many licensed products. For Halo 3, they have officially announced they have a multi-year agreement with Microsoft to produce Halo 3 face plates.
Microsoft themselves appear to have a few Halo 3 branded products of their own, looking to cash in on their own cash cow. Their First Party offerings include a Halo 3 branded Zune, two different wireless controllers and a wireless headset. While there’s no official announcement been made by Microsoft, images of these products can be found at GameStop with the Xbox 360 accessories listed as releasing on 9/4/07 for $59.99. Take both the date and price with a grain of salt, GameStop isn’t the most reliable for either this far ahead of release.
The two different wireless controllers feature art by the famous Comic Book artist Todd McFarlane who’s best known his Spawn and Spider-man work. Also included with the controller is an exclusive Halo 3 figure by McFarlane Toys, perhaps a hint at a future action figure line yet to be announced ?
The wireless headset is relatively boring looking next to the controllers. It’s an olive color with a gold on/off button and the Halo 3 logo on the mic face. No pretty graphics or cool action figure. I hope they’ve at least fixed the problems with this headset because it’s frankly an awful first party accessory.
The Halo 3 Zune will be available this week. It features some Halo 3 style graphics on the back and face on top of a black finish. Pre-loaded on the Zune is a bunch of Halo media including the Halo soundtrack, Halo 2 Volume 1 and 2 soundtracks, Halo 2 and Halo 3 trailers, three Halo 3 making of videos, exclusive Red vs Blue episode plus the first six episodes of Red vs Blue season one and lastly a ton of Halo 3 artwork, over 120 images in all.
With four million copies of Halo 3 said to be pre-ordered and the profit margins being the most on accessories, Microsoft as well as retailers stand to make a ton of money this September on the backs of Halo 3.
