Project Gotham Racing 4 looks awesome. Beautiful. All this beauty fits on a little DVD for your Xbox 360. Apparently, size isn't a factor for PGR4, no high-definition DVD's needed.
Some game companies have gone on record saying Blu-Ray is the way to go because a standard DVD "just isn't big enough" for all their rich artwork and beautiful mastery.
There were rumors about PGR4 and its difficulty with the standard DVD9 format capacity, but Bizarre Creations has set the record straight:
"When we started designing PGR4 our primary goals were to create a great and unique experience over and above PGR3, to push the hardware as far as we could, and obviously to ensure that we give great value for money. DVD size is absolutely not a factor that we consider when designing our games... and PGR4 is no exception. DVD9 gives us more than we need to create a fabulous experience for you guys."
You cannot get anymore specific than stating "size is absolutely not a factor," so I think the Xbox 360 is going to give the PlayStation 3 a run for its money in terms of racing games. Forza 2 was another beautiful looking title and PGR4 looks to one up them once again.
Now, let's look into their development cycle for this title release. First off, they're not against the wall trying to push out a launch title for the console. They have proven how great a game they can put out in a short time period so the next release should be ten times better without having such tight deadlines.
"The previous game, PGR3, had five environments. That's how much we could create given our time and resources for that game. With the longer development cycle we've had for PGR4, as well as the advantage of having final hardware, we wanted to create a far bigger and better game by this time including 10 environments, as well as a whole bunch of new gameplay features."
What can we expect? I'd guess something closer to perfection with PGR4. Although PGR3 was a great game, some of us played it for months after release, it did tend to show up as a bundled game or a "free giveaway" with Xbox 360 purchases.
This release should be a bit more serious and a bit more awe inspiring. This is one reason to be excited to be a gamer. Watching technology advance year after year!
Will you be picking up PGR4 or is it going to be a pass? A few great racing games have come out lately that look very 'next-gen,' will another one just be too much? Time will tell.
