Canadian NPD Group figures show the PlayStation 3 winning the July sales figures but that isn't how it worked out in North America.
With the 60GB model going on "sale" (until they run out of units at least) many folks figured we'd see a huge change in monthly sales figures vs. Microsoft's console, which we did. However, they didn't beat Microsoft... they did come close.
Xbox 360 saw 170,000 units sold in July compared to PlayStation 3's 159,000. If you want to mix the PS2 figures in there you'll get a different outcome, because Sony still sold off 222,000 old-generation consoles--more than Xbox 360 alone.
Stack on top of that 214,000 PlayStation Portable devices sold and you've got some nice numbers for Sony. Granted, Nintendo's 425,000 Wii sales puts most of it to shame; they also sold 405,000 Nintendo DS hand-helds.
The numbers are up for all involved, winner or technical "loser" in the unit battle.
"Overall, the game industry raked in an impressive $925.5 million during July, a 37 percent increase over the same period in 2006. Hardware sales surged 77 percent year over year, racking up $380.8 million in sales. Accessories were also way up, rising 51 percent annually to $125.4 million. Software was also in the ascendant, climbing 11 percent to $419.9 million."
All these figures were achieved without the huge franchise machines like Halo, Mario and Metal Gear. Now we can look forward to figures after some sales of Halo 3, Assassins' Creed, Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime 3: Corruption and all the other hot titles arriving to drain our pockets of excess green.
