Intel Buys Havoc for $21M

Intel has sent major ripples through the game industry when it purchased the Havoc physics engine for $21M.

Havok not only provides interactive software and services used by digital media creators in the movie industry, but it’s technology has also been used in more than 150 high-profile games including BioShock, Stranglehold, Halo 2, Half Life 2, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, Crackdown, Lost Planet: Extreme Condition, MotorStorm and Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. On the film side, Havok products have been used to create special effects in movies such as Poseidon, The Matrix, Troy, Kingdom of Heaven and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

This is a major coup for Intel, since Havoc is the most popular physics engine these days. What will it mean for AMD, Intel’s rival? Furthermore, what will it mean for other physics engines such as AGEIA?
