Changing out your tuning machines to some Grover or Schaller locking machines will help too. Not as much as a Floyd, but more than adequate. Unless you're dive bombing and know how to use a Floyd the normal past time guitarist has no need for one. 55-60 bucks and about 20 minutes of work and the tuner swap will be just fine.

Or a set of Locking Sperzel Tuners. They lock at the peg & there are self trimming versions too that will even cut new strings for you when you lock them in.

I forgot about Sperzels. Had them on my LP and they work great.

I'm pretty sure Grover makes a locking tuner now too. These are great if you have a fixed bridge guitar or a tremolo guitar without a locking nut on the Headstock.

I have Grover's on my Tele and they have an internal locking mechanism. It's nice if you want to try and keep that original look.

Speaking of Teles, there's a guy here locally with a few MIMs for sale on Craiglist.  I know before I said I was going to hold off on buying anything, but he's asking 350 each for them and for that price I'm thinking I might want to meet up and give them a test drive.  Any thoughts?

Meh. I'm not real into teles. they're real "spanky"/"twangy". Good for Country & some blues, but that's about in imo.

Teles are great if you like playing the blues, kinda bright. If you really want to check one out check out the Squire modified series Teles. The Duncan designed pickups sound really good. The MIM's are good but you have to search through 20 to find one where the fret edges won't cut the shit out of your fingers. Also Squire makes a John 5 replica that is fucking awesome and sounds amazing. It's unreal what that guy can make a Tele sound like.

I could be mistaken, but I think John 5 uses Humbucking Single coils. So there ya go.

I have been following these RS threads since the old 2o2p. You guys really got me interested in trying this game out.

So, I broke down and got this game recently. I have been playing guitar for more than 20 years. I thought this game would be a good excuse to keep up my practicing, and learn some new songs along the way. So far I am enjoying the game quite a bit. It does takes some getting used to though. My ability is well beyond the game right now BUT, it isn't LOL. I will get it together at some point though.

I do wish I had something like this when I was a kid, learning to play. It is a good learning tool. Looking to start getting some of the DL stuff now. Megadeath is at the top of my list. :)

LOL.....You follow me around with the grammar Nazi shtick and you are going to find yourself getting very frustrated trying to keep up with my horrible spelling and bad grammar.

However, I will try to keep from confusing death with deth. :) cheeky

Rock on.

@ Cotter & Outcast, thanks for the heads up on the telecaster.  Doesn't sound like I'd be happy with one unless I spent even more money and added a humbucker to it.  I think I have fought off my GAS attack, besides I have a gut feeling my wife is getting me one of these for my birthday:

Hopefully I'm happy with it, I'd hate to hurt her feelings when she's trying to do something nice for me.

Hadone, hte best advice I can give is to play whatever you're thinking of buying 1st. An Sg or Les Paul is going to feel redically different than a strat. You might find that you don't care for it, or you might love it, But don't get your mind set on anything just because it "look" cool. I'm pretty comfortable making a blind purchase now because I've got some experience under my belt & sort of know what to expect. But if you're new to the instrument, always take one for a spin before youdecide to buy.

On a side note...

I'd go for aLP before I went for a SG. That thing's too dan thin.

Yeah I understand what you're saying.  The thing is I think she may have already bought it and is just waiting until my birthday to give it to me.

LP's are nice but heavy. You may want to check out a Jackson, Schecter or even an Ibanez. I've been a longtime lover of Ibanez guitars... We can thank Satch and Vai for that. I'd spend a few hours at a GC and get what feels good to you. I like the sound of a Strat, being mainly a blues player it's what feels right... it took a bit of modding but I finally got it how I want it. Don't go off looks, I've mad some bad purchases doing that.

Ibanez givs the most bang for the buck these dys. I like Schecters a lot too. I've not had the pleasure of trying out a Jackson or Dean.

I'd really like to get my hands on a Charvel... that'll be my next purchase. That or an Epi firebird.

I have been playing the Guitar hero series since the PS2 and Rockband since it came out on Xbox60.  I enjoy all kinds of music.  Well after several years of "pretending" to play the guitar I bought Rockamith and a Guitar (a Dean Vendetta XM).  A Fairly inexspensive guitar, a few people told me these are good for beginers because they are light, because they are easy to tune, and they stay in tune better.  Anyway I'm gonna give it a go and see if I can play.

Finally got Rocksmith today.  It's down to $60 at Best Buy finally (was always $80 for the longest time).

I will be plugging this into my cheap-o, Korean-produced blue Squire Stratocaster as soon as I get can a few spare hours.

This is still bangin' round the back of my head, and I may just go ahead and give it a try.

Is this a good start for a pure beginner? I do have access to my son, he's been playing a couple years now, and I can actually tolerate his playing now...

I have a couple acoustics with amp ability and a couple low end electrics in the house.

Plus I could probably talk my boy into going halves on it...
