I got both and have to say that so far the Xbox wins hands down against the PS4. If you're assuming the same graphics or even slightly better on PS4 I think I'd still buy the xbox. I went and messed around with my buddies. The X1 is neat and has a lot of functionality whereas the PS4 is 1st and foremost a gaming system. There are little things and details especially in AC4 and Battlefield that looked better on the PS4 but K.I. was fun and seemed like it was done justice. Sure I can tell the PS4 what to do just like Kinect (if you have the PS4 camera) just not in total control like Kinect. The PS4 logs you in via facial recognition as well. So there are alot of similarities but the X1 wins hands down as far as being an entertainment hub... but that's not what I personally wanted in a gaming system, but the X1 is pretty neat from what I saw and experienced. I cancelled my launch day edition but may grab one if they do a Kinectless version. Not because the government can spy on you garbage but just because I don't see the point of it being mandatory at this time.
Ok, time to weigh in. Had since launch, had the same wtf moment with the HDMI in/out ports that Tank did, update went smoothly. What I miss already since party chat is hit and miss: CHAT PAD, VOICE MAIL, and a real headset. It sucks having to send messages via xbox controller! By the by, my headset was working fine UNTIL yesterday at some point no one could hear me. I went throught the Xbox support and did their troubleshooting, which was all of "turn mute off, turn volume up and see if the green light flashes when you talk, if it doesn't you may have to get it repaired or replace it". Guess I'm taking that wonderful peice of craftsmanship back to GS for a replacement. Other than those issues, its just getting used to the Win 8 tile system and where they put everything.
EDIT** Oh.. oh.. let me add that I did not hook up kinect and it appears to have been working fine. I elected to do this for 2 reasons. I saw that when I was setting up that I could do this later, which was great becuase of reason 2 ,my wife had an explosion (aneurism?) when I got home Friday night. She had pulled out the xmas tree stand and moved the furniture around and when I walked in from work she started going on about the fresh trees at Lowes and Home Depot. I told her we were NOT going to get a Xmas tree tonight. (Had already planned, I thought ,to go on Sunday night)Don't know where she got this idea from, but that was the fight from hell. She knew I was going to be hooking the xbox up when I got home so...don't know. Anyway, screaming at the kinect wasn't going to be a good time, anytime during the weekend.

I haven't tried party chat yet - I miss the mini menu where you can instantly add people to parties or just check their status without backing out and opening a new app. I'm sure I'll get used to it. Everyone, make sure you go into Kinect settings and turn off "use Kinect for chat" - that way it won't always pick you up in games where you aren't and don't want to use a headset.
Couple of other things. Tank and I constantly tried to connect through party chat and couldn't. The error message kept popping up for him and so on. I could connect and chat with others. Then on Saturday I couldn't connect at times getting the error message. Tank was going to try to skype and see how that worked and since you don't need kinect for skype, or video, that may be the voice mail option. Don't know if he got that working or not.
I want to be able make my preferences stick. I want the friends menu to ALWAYS be the way I want it, along with some other menus. Anyone know how to do this?
Even with all the little things, the only thing I miss are the notifications. I would like to know when a friend/follower gets on.
I think they need to do it for Favorites. I think they took it out because of 1000 followers. That would just be constant popups.
I don't like that there is no sort of mini dash, so you have to completely open up the Achievements app and then select the achievement just to see what it was. They also seem far too slow. On the 360, it popped and immediately you saw the name. With the new ones it scrolls like 3 times for each popup. Not as satisfying.
I think a lot of this will get updated once they get feedback.

The thing I will say is that my PC still kicks the shit out of both the PS4 and my Xbox in terms of graphics (and its more then a year old). Since you can easily now play your PC games on a TV in the living room with an Xbox controller I see no real point in comparing graphics between the two. Then again, that's just me and I'm sure people will continue to argue about how much better the PS4 looks then the Xbox One. I have both and to be honest 720p at 60 FPS is fairly hard to test against 1080p at 30-60.
The party bit was a little glitchy for me yesterday, but otherwise it works for the most part. I don't get why they removed the voice messaging bit though unless its to tempt people to use smart glass more.
@Outcast, I honestly doubt there will ever be a kinectless system. I'm not saying they couldn't do it, but the menu system is convoluted enough that using voice commands is extremely preferrable to getting to what you want. For instance..rather then leave the game I just snap the party screen onto the screen onto the side and can invite/join from there then unsnap again. I miss the quick live menu from the 360...it was much easier in some aspects. Who knows how well they will refine things though in future updates and maybe using the system without the kinect will become a more viable experience.
1. Party chat is fucked up. Even with everyone having 'open nat' , it still is hit or miss if it works.
2. Even if you make a party and join a party, you're still not 'in partychat' unless you click the turn on party chat button. Seems like a needless extra step
3. OMG i miss my chatpad . You also can't voice message people so you're stuckk moving the cursor around an on screen keyboard... lame
4. HDMI intput works well but there is lag. You prob won't notice it using a cable box, but if you hook youre laptop or other game console up you will notice it the screen lag
5. My console doesn't respond to XBOX ON. It does the other voice commands fine and I have the option turned on in the power up settings to come on but it doesnt
6. There is no visibility into the hard drive, you can't pull up a 'storage' view like 360 had
7. Can't 'snap' skype
8. Achievements need un-necessary button clicks to actuall get the details. Why can't the details just be on the previous screen.
9. Achievements now have built in progres bars which is a nice addition
10. The feed is cool & when people upload videos you can select and play them except it takes longer to start playing the video than the runtime of the video in most cases and the playback usually stops 1 or 2 times to buffer.
11. Twitch stream quality is pretty questionable, goes from really good to blobby with most the average quality being 'servicable'. Meanwhile the same stream plays great on a PC.
12. Inviting people to a party lets you click a whole bunch of people and then invite them, so you don't need to invite each individually. That's cool, but back to point #1 if chat doesn't work, it's worthless.
Overall i'd say the UI design is inefficient and far too button pressy . There's a lot of room here for streamlining and it's missing long time featurs that xbox 360 has enjoyed. I think this system could have used another 6-9 in optimization and polish work. add to that missing accessories like chat pad and being able to use your own headsets for comms and I give Xbox ONE a 6/10 on a review score.

yeah they'll never sell it without Kinect, so I would just not expect that.

I never had a PS3 but did they experience a similar evolutuion to their interface?

nope, Sony never changed. It was X-bar the whole time, and I believe PS4 is the same way.
PS4 is totally different now and the XMB is gone. It's very simple and uncluttered.
