Halo 3 Beta Tester Expectations

What should one expect to deal with when they finally get to test Halo 3's Beta? XerxdeeJ over at www.tiedtheleader.com posted an excellent blog entitled Guardians of the Beta where he talks about what a Beta Test is, referring to the upcoming Halo 3 Beta of course.

He gives his views on what you should expect as a Beta Tester from the possibility that Halo 3 may crash daily or that Bungie could scrap it early. He reminds us that this is an unfinished product and those that would proclaim to the world that "Halo 3 is a'gonna suck!" might as well go heckle a "work crew at a construction site over the fact that a building without a roof will never hold back the rain." Nice analogy right there XerxdeeJ :)

Having some experience in the testing field, I agree with everything XerxdeeJ has to say in his blog. Don't go in thinking that you have a right to be there, especially if you "bought" the ability to play the demo via Crackdown.

This is a Beta release of Halo 3 and there will be bugs, probably a lot of them. That is where you come in, find those bugs and report them. Don't get pissed if your bug isn't fixed either. Depending on how severe (i.e. how often does it happen, what is the impact to the customer, etc) the issue is, it may not get fixed. Welcome to the real world of testing and development ladies and gentlemen.

In the end, your efforts as a Beta tester will make Halo 3 better, even if you don't report any bugs. Just you logging in and playing for a few hours will help test the network infrastructure, and that is probably one of the main goals of this Beta test.
