America (Drunken Rant)

South Park, Family Guy, American Dad, The Daily Show, The Colbert Report, Penn and Tellers Bullshit. most stuff from George Carlin. Did I miss any? I understand that all these shows have sharp political and social agendas (that for the most part paralell my own, so you know my bias). These shows are a part of pop culture, and viewed not as serious news or commentary, but as lowbrow fart joke shows, however some of these shows make their points brilliantly beneath their layer of wonderfully yummy and entertaining filth.

I wonder how many other viewers see ? Are we all just laughing at the humor and not getting the point? Do we need it to be dumbed down and made entertaining?...Yes we do. We have been living the good life for so long that we have become fat, lazy, slow thinking and apathetic. This includes myself.

I used to vote, now I think that both sides are the same, and I can't lobby the fat lying money whores enough to have my (or your)best interests in mind. I was passionate about debating interesting, important things like politics, the purpose of religion, the existence of God, the motives of people. Now I don't bother, because you think what you think and I think what I think, and neither of us is going to change. Why piss people off and risk it degenerating into a fight ( Ahhhh....Blunt trauma to the head is the best way to win an argument)

Wanna know what pisses me off?

My wife teaches 6-7 grade science, At the very least her little corner of the educational system is melting down. I suspect the rot has spread further .People don't want to pay more taxes to fund education(The money is mismanaged anyway) The schools DON"T HAVE ENOUGH BOOKS, the ones they do have are missing pages, missing covers, broken spines, outdated info, the list goes on! The kids come to school not only physically unprepared to learn, UNFED! in a country of fat people, without winter jackets, without pens, pencils,or notebooks.( My wife went through our closet to find some old shirts of mine to give to one of her students.)Tired because they were up all night (God knows why). Also emotionally unprepared to learn,  unable to sit down and shut up for 42 minutes.Behavior disorders, learning disabilities, emotional problems. These kids mostly come from broken homes, the parents have no involvement or interest in their kids education or wellbeing. (If your kid got suspended from school and couldn't come back untill you had a meeting with the principal, how many weeks would you keep postponing the meeting because you couldn't make it?) I WOULD MEET THE PRINCIPAL AT NIGHT, AT A LOCATION OF HER CHOOSING, AFTER I HAD WORKED A 14 HOUR SHIFT, TO GET MY KID BACK IN CLASS FOR AN EDUCATION! The parents see no value in education, so the kids see no value. We have entire segments of population living in a culture that condones falure. The system is broke.

And if anybody plays the race card for any reason, I will slap the shit out of you. I see plenty of dumb white kids in the hallways. Try and stay on topic here.

Most of these kids never get a real chance, if the system dosen't fail them then their own parents do. I know Megan reaches some of them, she is great at her job.Everyday she has more stories, some good, most bad. I help her grade papers and I guest lecture at her school once in a blue moon. (During a lecture one of her students was using a plant ID book I brought in with a book on botanical latin words to find out what the latin names of common plants mean! It wasn't an assignment, and I didn't tell him how to do it!!! I almost cried) I guess 1 in 20 or so has a shot at college.

As a country how long can we do the absolute minimum in all aspects of Education, Work, Goverment, Rights, Family ect? Slipping behind in all ways, our educational system cranking out non productive, non functioning Americans?

America is the greatest country in the world, I am so lucky to live here. we have rights and freedoms, I (myself) earn a paycheck big enough to have my own house, 2 cars and health insurance. Our quality of life is higher than anywhere else. I love it here, but I don't think anybody can fix this, because it means changing minds and getting people engaged, not just a few, but a LARGE majority.

I think Rome is going to fall, 30 perhaps 40 years. We will stay as long as we can, but when it gets too bad...

I hear Australia is nice...

P.S. DIssenting voices will (probably) be gleefully ignored. You believe what you believe and I believe what I believe.

For those of us without children, what can we do to help? I have offered to speak to all ages about food safety and "sanitation" but so far have not received any requests.

I know, honey! I know! And unfortunately it's nationwide (you don't live in my back yard, do you?). I fight those very same battles in a classroom of 4-year-old Pre-K students. C'mon! These kids should be at school, excited to learn! Some of them are so tired they can't even stay awake at the breakfast table. Is it infuriating? Sure it is! But we little teachers just have to believe that we can make a change, even in just one. And just one is ABSOLUTELY worth it! Do I remember the bad? Sure, I do! But I revel in the good. That's where I choose to sit squarely and think. My principal used to tell me frequently, "You are just going to realize that you can't save them all." To which I would always answer, "But what kind of teacher am I if I don't even try?" Tell Megan to have a great day at school!

Amen. The parents have become the unconcerned, the children set the rules of how the home shall be run, and the parents say "I can't control them". I see it in public everyday when kids complain or rant and rave and the parents either immediately cave in or try to reason with them, or simply ignore them and their terrible behavior. To me, it comes from a society that has come to believe that NOTHING is their fault or responsibility. It is always someone elses. Putting a hot cup of coffee between your thighs should be met with derision and laughter, not multimillion dollar settlements. Thanks for setting me off on what started to be a calm day. ;-)

The root cause of this is selfish, unconcerned parents. I try to be a good dad and help at their school in every way I can. As far as the book situation - it is all management's fault. I recently saw a breath of fresh air along this line - Scott McNealy, Chairman of Sun Microsystems is starting an online curriculum and materials website that will always be current and FREE. http://www.curriki.org

You've outlined one of the major reasons we don't have and aren't planning on having children. I can't stand the thought of what they'd be subjected to...being different, questioning, and driven...it almost has killed me! Spoken by The Great Sage of our Times, Keanu Reeves in Parenthood: "You know, Mrs. Buckman, you need a license to buy a dog, to drive a car - hell, you even need a license to catch a fish. But they'll let any butt-reaming asshole be a father. "

Yep, depressing, irritating stuff, knowing that people too stupid to be able to correctly use condoms and birth control pills have more children than the rest of us. It's like helplessly watching cockroaches hump on the edge of your dinner plate while you try to eat. The puropose of evolution is not to create higher intelligence. The purpose is to create creatures that are better at reproducing, and lots of them. It's working.

I am a proud father to a brand new, fresh off the lot, 7 month old son. The day I learned he existed I made a promise to myself, my wife, and my son that I will do anything to make his life better. This includes his education. I do agree with your comments above. I feel a sense of foreboding reminicent of a book I read in college... Atlas Shrugged. As we keep catering to the lowest common denominator, each successive generation becomes less able to handle life. Well said... You do have a brother out there that sees the damage we are inflicting upon ourselves.
