Shared on Thu, 07/01/2010 - 07:33The year was 1976 and I was shopping at K-Mart with my mother. I don't remember what we were there to buy, though knowing my mother it was just shopping for the sake of shopping. On the way in we had been listening to the radio and "50 Ways To Leave Your Lover" had been on. I loved that song. The chorus was one of those that you just couldn't get out of your head.
Anyway, as we're heading out my mom detoured into the music aisle. Remember when department stores had aisles of recorded music, kiddies? It wasn't hard to find. It was a very popular album that year. She surprised the hell out of me by handing me a copy of "Still Crazy After All These Years", my very first album. On 8-Track. I could hardly wait to get to the car. We were very lucky because we had bought my mom's first (and still only, I think) new car that year. A metallic red Charger Daytona. With white leather interior. And an 8-track player.
Over 30 years on that is still one of my favorite albums. This year I bought another music first: my first MP3 player. I feel so relevant. So here I am, decades later, still listening to that record, although in its digital form.
Funny how stuff like that sticks with you, eh?
