My wife came across an article about a notification placed by the FBI that a malicious hacker group used malware called "DNSchanger" to hack millions of users to re-direct them to clone websites that had their banner-adds running to allow the hackers to earn millions in add fees.
Here's the link to on of the sites running the story: http://www.manolith.com/2012/04/22/fbi-get-tested-or-lose-your-internet-...
The articles I've looked at say that the FBI has already arrested the hackers and because of the possibility of hundreds of thousands to lose their internet connection they kept the servers up whle working on alternate solutions. Sounds really nice of them. However, they are running out of funds to keep the servers up and will be shutting them down soon. They list several options on how to cure the issue. Some of the options include going to certain websites to see if your system is infected and other suggestions.
There is also an article in PC Magazine about it.
Color me paranoid but the Federal government hasn't exactly proven itself trustworthy over the past several DECADES. Let's see, there was that whole "Reefer Madness" campaign that, even though I'm not a supporter of marijuana or any narcotic, was a blatant exaggeration.
Then there was the nutritional mis-guidance of the 60's and 70's that's still going on. You know, the "eat less animal based products and cholesterol because they'll kill you so eat all this grain and vegetable oils instead". What they forgot to mention was that cholesterol is the primary component of brain cells and all other cellular structures in the body. Since then the heat disease counter hasn't gone down, it's gone up. Brain function related debilitations have been increasing exponentially as well as other diseases and disabilities related to cellular structure and organ health. Yup, thanks for all those great health tips.
BtW, the guy at the head of the congressional committee that decided all of that was George S. McGovern of South Dakota. He had major interests in grain farming and other agricultural concerns. The guy he appointed as his primary consultant during those hearings?... a vegetarian.
Since then the Federal government has done all kinds of ill advised crap in our names for "our safety and health" that has done everything but. And I'm including the Draconian health care system that is about to dig into us.
So, months after trying to violate our privacy by usurping the internet they're telling me that I have to let them scan my computer to "fix it"?
While they have a list of other potential fixes to this internet issue that don't seem to be invasive I still don't trust them.
I'd rather lose my internet connection...
Of course, an easy fix if it does happen will be to just rebuild my operating system. Gee, thanks Fed, I don't think I could have figured that out on my own...
...assholes.
