I Have a PlayStation 3

While the title should say it all, it really doesn't. My wife and I decided to finally pull the trigger on the PS3 because we found a deal at BestBuy to get Metal Gear Solid 4, KillZone 2 and the 80GB PlayStation 3 for $399.99. Now, the trick to the bundle is that MGS4 has already dropped in price so we're not saving a full "59.99" but it still seemed like a good deal for two games that aren't that bad to have on hand. It was Jennifer's birthday and she wanted the PS3, it was a bit costly but we figured we could get the bundle and I had a $50 gift card from father's day to help absorb the damage to the wallat.

I also stopped at GameStop and took advantage of their "buy 2 pre-owned games and get one free" deal. Jennifer then used a birthday gift card at bestbuy from my parents to get a couple games and the PS3 remote (so we have the remote for watching NetFlix DVD/Blu-Rays). With that, in total, we now have a PS3 and seven games.

  • LittleBigPlanet (bought it along side the bundle on day 1)
  • MGS4 (arrived with bundle)
  • Killzone 2 (arrived with bundle)
  • Stranglehold (free with my two pre-owned games at GameStop)
  • Uncharted (pre-owned)
  • Lego Starwars (pre-owned)
  • Overlord 2
  • Sacred 2

Jennifer wanted Overlord 2 as it kinda looks like Diablo and she picked up Sacred 2. Thus far we've only played a couple games as we've had the console for about a week; I did take it on vacation last week and played an entire week on a crappy standard definition TV.

Thus far I've logged six hours with MGS4 and just hit act 2. Jennifer is partially through Killzone 2, I played a few stages as well when she was tired. However, we're both having a lot of fun with LittleBigPlanet, the main reason we wanted the PS3 to begin with but couldn't justify it for one game. We're playing two-player and busting through the game stages, currently just playing the stock content. My daughter is six and she's having some fun with it as well, her and I are through about six stages but some of the intricate jumping, grabbing and swinging gets her a bit flustured and nervous (she hates dying in games).

So, there you have it, we finally commited to the Sony product line for the first time. We've never invested in a PS1 or PS2 console, sticking mainly with Nintendo and, lately, Microsoft's 360.

My overall opinion thus far, the console is too damn expensive. It plays like a PC in almost all ways from graphic quality to complete game installation, this is a PC for your TV but at a cost. As for having the Blu-Ray player, it's an added bonus but was not even considered when shopping for a PS3. I wanted a GAME CONSOLE as my number one priority, the Blu-Ray was just attached to it. That said, I've upgraded my NetFlix account for Blu-Ray status ($3 extra a month) since we now have the player.

The interface is nice, usable and all that. The PlayStation Store's best feature is using United States currency over the "fantasy points" system Microsoft uses--my number one reason for hesitating to purchase content because the points barrer. I don't want to "figure it out" I want to know the cost and I don't want to screw around with buying points.

The PS3 graphics are obviously good, they better be for the cost of this thing. The game selection at the store is decent but my first born for a few LESS first person and third-person shooters.  More variety would be nice and I'm not talking sports and hack 'n slash games. I'd like puzzle games, RPG games and more adventure games.

Congratulations. I owned a PS1 but not a PS2. I bought the PS3 one of the times I had to send my 360 away for repair and it has been my system of choice since. You have some super solid titles My favorite in the list would be Uncharted but I really love KZ2 online and MGS4 was very strange but epic (never played an MGS title before). LBP is a great game that you will be able to play forever and it is great for all age groups (which is nice for us father types :) ) I don't know if you like JRPGs or not but even if you don't - Valkyria Chronicles is an AWESOME game. The art style is gorgeous, the story telling and voice acting is great and the straetegic elements are fantatstic....can't recommend it enough especially if you like SRPGs

Definitely check out the PSN. There are some phenomenal games on the cheap that the family can enjoy. Calling All Cars can be a fun multiplayer game, pretty basic. Super Stardust HD for the twin stick shooter crowd, Flower is a very zen game that anyone in your family could play, basically all you have to do is tilt the controller and hold a button to go fast, and you can also get on board with the PixelJunk games. Monsters can be really tough, but Eden is seriously fantastic. A wealth of great small games on PSN that XBLA really can't touch, IMO.
