Nerdier than thou?

I’ve always gotten the odd looks. Big guy, head buried in a book, hovering over my sketchbook laboriously working on a drawing of some bizarre nightmare, or planning out some devious plot for a D&D game. I can admit my social skills are limited, and I generally keep my circle of friends to a fairly small group who can somewhat "get" me. Add in my loves of comics, gaming, anime, and movies (even the really bad cheesy flicks) and I’m just a conglomerate of all things dorky. I can live with the odd looks, and have for 20+ years.

I’m an artist and gamer, I think that best describes me. Video games have always been part of my life, from Pong to WarCrack, and I realize 2old2play is a video gamers site, but tabletop is my true gaming love. Dungeons & Dragons is the most common of these, the one that the average non-gamer would recognize, but Gamma World in the early ‘80s was where I was introduced to RPGs. Since then, I was hooked. D&D, Marvel Super Heros, Dark Sun, CyberPunk/CyberGeneration, Vampire the Masquerade, Werewolf the Apocalypse, Fading Suns, the list goes on. This sort of gaming feeds my art. They’re inspiration for stories and characters that evolve in my mind and need to get out. I create scenarios for intrepid adventurers to explore and challenges to face. This is the sort of thing that, so far, I can’t get from video games. Don’t get me wrong, there’s sheer joy in getting a kill from a random ‘nade toss on Halo2 or rolling into Undercity with a mess of guild mates and the trash talk from the awesome people and total douches I’ve met here at my home on the web. But I miss rolling dice, the shuffling of papers, flipping through game books looking for that special ability to round out the character concept, and sitting around a table with a group of buddies with pizza, chips, booze, and sodas gearing up for an adventure. There was a time in my life where Friday and Saturday night was for gaming with the gang. We hung out, talked trash, and gamed. It was something we’d look forward to all week. If someone had a tough day at work, it was "Man, I can’t wait till this weekend, I need to kill something!". It was a special thing, like a summer barbeque of meat and potatoes with a tasty dessert. Video games, for me at least, are like a drive through burger and fries. It’s convenience. I can log on anytime I want and quest in WoW or get my ass handed to me in Matchmaking, and yes, I do enjoy doing that actually,(well getting reamed in Matchmaking not so much :p ). But part of my gamer soul is just unsatisfied.

The people I used to tabletop game with have gone their own ways, due to responsibilities, distance, or WoW, and yet I keep making adventures, buying books or pieces for games I’ll likely not be able to play. Yet I still do these things because the artist in me needs to create. It’s easy for me to post up my latest drawing and get the "oohs and ahhs" because it’s instant. You look at it and react to it, easy peasy. But I also create stories, characters with histories, and whole worlds, but to get someone to be able to read the whole mess of something like that basically goes against all our ingrained gamer ADD. The fact of my tons of half finished ideas and some 48 WoW toons are a testament of my very own suffering of short attention span, and honestly, I’m shocked you’ve read this far in my rambling, heh. But at long last, let me make my point...

I have to say I’m proud to be part of 2old2play. I’ve never seen or been part of such an "online community" that truly extends into peoples lives the way 2o2p does. So, even though I tend to be quiet on Vent or Live, or that I don’t post much, or if I’ve my head buried in a book, hovering over my sketchbook laboriously working on a drawing of some bizarre nightmare, or planning out some devious plot for a D&D game, keep in mind that this is the place I want to be, with kindred spirits, and we’re all just different sides of a d20.

I watched you sketch for a few at the Lan. I realized I was staring, but it was fascinating to see simple lines come together to make a recognizable picture. I have very limited artistic skills, so the process was mesmerizing to me. And it was a kck ass sketch! I'm sorry I didn't butt into your work and compliment you, but there are times when even a loudmouth like me realizes he would be a nuisance. If you ever post your stories, or make any of your other creative works available for viewing/reading, let us know. I for one would be most interested! Maybe next year I'll mosey up and say howdy! First off, great post Cestual... For the record, you and Smoke are the dorkiest nerds I know, and I make fun of you for such whenever I see you guys, but everyone needs a couple uber dork buddies. Of all the nerdy D&D fanatics I know, I'm glad you guys are the ones I call friends... Look forward to seeing you again next year... D

I can relate to half of your blog. I never was one for creating and drawing, but I miss the days of rolling dice and solving the puzzles. Nowadays it's impossible to find people to play with, but when I come across my books I miss playing so bad. Here's to all us D&D nerds out there, everyone else doesn't know what their missing. Every game has it's limits, but D&D was only limited by your imagination.

Excellent blog, sir! Your art work is an awe inspiring talent. I don't consider you nerdy, just dedicated to a different path the most of the rest of us. Keep it up, we need folks like you on the site too.

Great Blog Darth!! I regret many things by not attending the Lan's. But not getting a chance to meet in person and hang out with a talented creator and warm hearted soul such as yourself is by far the biggest sacrifice. I have made many friends here at 2o2p but only one that I feel a kindred creative connection with.:-) I hope that you will continue to stay immerse in your love of table top gaming in-spite of not getting to play as much as you once did. If it is the spark that lights the fire of your artistic expression then it is as important as the air you breath or the water you drink. Perhaps you underestimate the attention span of some of us fellow 2o2p gammers when you say " But I also create stories, characters with histories, and whole worlds, but to get someone to be able to read the whole mess of something like that basically goes against all our ingrained gamer ADD. " I hope that soon you will take the time to post up some of your game creations. The fact that they are not as easy to post up and for people to consume and react to quickly, easy peasy, as you say :-) shouldn't stop you from sharing them with the community. I think you might be surprised by how much time some members might take to enjoy and experience your creations. :-) Josh your a talented guy, a warm hearted person and a shining example of what makes 2o2p the spectacular and unique community that it is. - BAT

I truly appreciate the comments gang. I guess I just needed to get that off my chest. Hopefully, I can scare up a tabletop game next year. Kirk, I always look forward to our collaborations, and your work is such an inspiration for me since you are a working artist, not an easy thing to do. After WizCon in Chicago, I was really considering taking another crack at comics, maybe just as a web comic or maybe doing an original rpg setting, illustrated of course. Not sure if I could land a small-press publisher, or just do it as a .pdf file. I'll have to mull over that one. Keep an eye out and maybe I'll post up one of my rpg ideas.

You know how I feel about it. Im simply amazed at the work you do and like I said at the lan, still would love to buy a piece for my own collection. As for a web comic, I say go for it. I would totally add up a section on 2old2play for you. Might be nice to have 11,000 member look at your stuff.
