A funny thing about thumbs up...

I know I should probably not even post about the whole thumbs up/down thing since the new hidden system is still not favored by everyone, but I did find something interesting over the last week or so and I just had to share it. Are you ready for it?

Thumbing down as a whole is on a major decline. Yes, even the members that groups love to hate have seen their thumbs down nearly disapear. I suppose it just means that people who thumb down do so only if they know the author will see their big "internet fuck you." What is more strange though is how the thumbs up also seem to be on the rise. I'm not quite sure why this is, but maybe it means these secret thumbs down people can feel safe from their peers and actually vote on a blog they like. Hmmmmm. What do you think?

Interesting social experiment. But i'm not sure on your reasoning about thumbs up though because it was still anonymous. It's not like thumbing anyone outed you either way. But the results are interesting nonetheless.

I'm on record. I want the thumbs back. It's a way of providing an added layer of communication. We have to be mature enough to accept the good with the bad. but yer the boss.

I stopped rating blogs when the authors couldn't see the result. Bring them back but also add a 1 week ban from the site for anyone posting a blog complaining about getting thumbs down!

To me, the anonymous thumbs up/down system was a way to encourage/discourage a person to blog more/less. If you like someone's style he gets a thumbs up, if you dont then thumbs down. You'd also give thumbs up to your friends just because they are friends and you'd want them more active here. If you really liked/hated a particular blog entry you'd go and post a comment in there. Even a simple +1 would do the trick. Although i'm thinking negative comments would be far less because it takes away your anonymity. So the rise of thumbs up may be because ppl are making more and more friends here.

Instead of a thumbs system, lets do a 1-5 scale. Make it something fun like 3 Platypuses out of 5 or something. I wonder if that would change the way blogs are rated at all. Platypeople? Platypii? You know what I mean.

hmmmm, interesting. I'm glad you brought this up, doodi. I also like the definition of a thumbs down. ur so good at just putting it out there! I like the thumbs cuz , well, just cuz I do. It should be mandatory to put a comment if you thumbs down, tho. Thumb down just cuz ur in a bad mood is not a good thing......that's all.

I guess I can only speak for myself--I stopped thumbing down either way. The first week they were taken down I was thumbing everything down for the hell of it until I got bored with that. So if anyone else was doing the same thing, perhaps that is why thumbs down have decreased. Yes I'm an asshole. By having thumbs down taken away, I became an anonymous thumbs down fairy.

Personally, I think the system should be simply weight, you get a thumbs up automatically when someone clicks on your blog to read it (they'd only click if they care just a bit). Then, they get a second thumbs up if someone comments. You should get a hotter blog report if people are clicking and commenting as that is what makes the entire process so social to begin with.

How do they get the pimento's in the olives anyways?
sicrik's picture
Submitted by sicrik on Mon, 04/20/2009 - 14:14
@Baine......by putting the pimento's on your thumb, in the thumb up posistion, then putting the olive in your ass......and giving yourself a big thumbs up!!!!! Personally I think that if you were to remove the rating's, you should have just removed the thumbs all together......this has been a slight issue in the 3 years or so I have been here, dont know why all of a sudden something was done about it......I have my suspicions. But I think if people need to have their ego stroked, or find out if people dont like what they have bloged, you should add another column to the blog zone and have top daily blogs, next to recent blogs....so the more thumbs up you get, the higher you are ranked, and vice versa.......or just go on with life, and forget about stupid thumbs. I thumbed you down by the way!!! of course you probably already knew that!!!

I'm willing to bet at some point he did in fact have one. Looking at him I bet he's more of a cheesesteak kind of guy.

Did you know Philadelphians Pat and Harry Olivieri are often credited with inventing the cheesesteak by serving chopped-up steak on hoagie rolls in the early 1930s?

Are those the two guys with sandwich shops across the street from eachother? I saw that on the food network the other day. I imagine them having sandwich wars ending in random condiments being tossed at each other.

Do you think that is how modern gang warfare took its roots? It had to have started somewhere, why not condiment tossing.

You'll need courses in sociology to figure it all out. Good luck with that. I like codemonkey's idea with a caveat. Popular because of negative traffic is still popular. The flame blogs will still rise to the top unless the site's population rebel and ignore downer attention whores.

I'll have to go with Kriss Kross. Great news, the cubs will win the world series this year. But only if You endure an entire weekend (48 hours) of watching Thelma and Louise OR the same time period and you only get to watch the first episode of Touched by an Angel. Which way do you go.
