So Tired... More V3 Bullshit

After months and months and months and months of fighting with the Devs with them FAILING constantly to live up to dead lines, I think we have finally reached an agreement to have them release our unfinished data over to me so Derek and we can finally finish V3 on our own. We are currently working out the final pricing structure and uploading the remaining data to our servers but hopefully this will all be behind me by the morning (it's 3:11 AM here).

For those of you keeping track, we began work on V3 in August of 2009 and after the preliminary design, structuring, and layout we hired an outside firm to finish the coding of the site. The site is built completely from the ground up so all the code is designed around a very flexible frame work that will allow us to fix, rearrange, and add new features at a much faster and scalable rate. When I sent out my request for proposals back in Oct of 09 I tried to make all the would be developers understand that 2o2p had A LOT of data and we needed the redesign to take no more then 3 months. I found who I believed was a trust worthy and capable firm and we were on our way!

Flash forward to today and with a little bit of simple math you can tell that our devs fell OBSCENELY short from this deadline. In fact, they missed the mark by almost 10 months. Even after these 10 months the site is STILL not completed and we will no doubt be left with a lot of work to complete on our own. Now I know what you're saying, "Doodi, why the fuck did you wait so long to back out? Are you really this dumb?" Well the easy answer is yes, yes I am. In truth things are a bit more complicated.

I always knew from the beginning that the site would be fairly hard to port over. There is a fuck ton of data on 2o2p (millions of forum posts) and going overseas (I'm so unAmerican) meant dealing with a language barrier on top of this. As time went on and we got closer to completion I kept seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. 1 month would turn into 2, but then I would see another 15% of the site done which gave me the hope of a final project. Eventually I reached a tipping point where backing out would mean starting ALL OVER AGAIN and that would mean tons of lost cash (5k so far) and even more lost time. At this point I was at the mercy of the devs and every passing week would bring about 1 tiny ass update that I could have done on my own in 15min.

Well last week I snapped... I figured if this thing was ever going to get done, I would have to pick up the pieces and do it myself. I began the process of issuing a formal complaint and tried to be as nice as possible while doing so (As a side note if you ever are looking for IT work Elance is great when it comes to overseeing freelance or contract jobs). As a final plea to save their future payments the devs tried to "finish" what was left, but once again fell massively short. After a long conversation it appears as though we are willing to go our separate ways. I'm hoping to have the site in my hands and in beta within the week. Keep in mind there is A LOT to do. I hoping with the feed back of SCC and other members we can make the new site into something much more then just a forum for older gamers.

And with that I would just like to say thanks to everyone that has held on this long. It has been one of the most frustrating experiences I have ever had to deal with and I'm sure debugging will only add onto this drama more. I'm glad you guys have stayed so positive for so long and only hope you think it was all worth it once we are done. Thank you to the SCC members who literally keep this site alive. Without you guys, we would have no way to pay for servers. Thanks to all the staff that donate their time because they truly love what 2o2p is about. Finally, fuck you to all the POS devs who promise big, deliver small, and lie with a straight face.

CUNTS

Now I'm going to bed.

There are some pretty smart people on this site who I'm sure could help if needed. Not me though, I'm a dumbass.

FWIW, in my experience it is usually the sales guys and "project managers" that have trouble with the truth and not the devs, but your experience still sucks.

dude. I totally feel your pain. I just launched a product with my company. we had requirements done in July 09. Took 18 months to finish something that should have only taken 9. Developers always seem to overpromise and under deliver. And no blame can be given to the business side, because we slashed and cut all kinds of requirements because the developers kept whining that they had too much to do. whiners.

Give those geek pussies some real jobs and see how much they whine. Also, I hope you received all your data before your rant so no one at the development firm places a surprise in your package.

I wish i was a programmer, i've got nothing but time on my hands and could help. But i haven't coded for 20 years. Guess outsourcing overseas does have it's downsides. Ah well, try and chill and have a good holiday. The site we have here works, your army of spam deleters is working well. So have a good holiday and get back to it in the new year. It's not like we don't have a working site to hang on.

@slowthumbs - were you in a waterfall or an agile methodology? Were there technological constraints within the interrelated pieces of the system? Did developers overpromise, or did project managers feel compelled to gloss over technical issues and not accept input from their developers? How engaged was the business during the development cycle? Were there regular checkpoints with the business to show progress and catch small changes early? It's all too easy to blame developers or the business for project slippage, but in my experience, it usually comes down to pussy PM's who are too scared to tell the business that 10 pounds won't fit in a 5 pound sack.
