I miss my puppy!!!

So, if you didn't know already....yesterday I woke up to find our dog eating a puppy....my favorite, the one we were going to keep.

I went to feed them and to figure out why they were yelping and whining so much when I woke up and saw that one of them was missing.  I checked to see who was there and noticed that Short Bus was out of the box.  Then I heard this horrible CRUNCH.  Looked to the corner where Comet was sitting in the dark and saw a little black body with tiny white toes hanging out of her mouth.  I completely freaked out, started screaming and crying and ran upstairs to wake Sicrik up, I guess he told you what happened from there.  I was so upset I couldn't think straight....and I can't get that god damned crunch out of my head.  It was the most horrible sound ever.  He was my baby.  He loved to cuddle with me, lick my ear and play with my hair.  He was the calmest puppy ever....so damn sweet.

I miss him

I've seen that happen with cats, but only to kittens that died stillborn. I'm sorry Durty. BTW, this is the first time I've ever been here!

Thats rough but not entirely unnatural. I'm sorry to hear you had to deal with that though. The mom could have sensed some sort of issue with the pup that maybe a vet could have identified.. and if so her biological reaction would be to do exactly what she did. unfortunately you'll never know for sure. deep breath though ok? Well i found this answer, was the eaten one the runt of the pack? That might explain it. 'Dogs usually eat puppies because the puppy is not healthy or the mother thinks the pup will not have a good chance of survival, or sometimes if the living conditions aren't right for a puppy (extremely cold weather for example). They actually eat the puppies so that a predator/potential harm-inducer will not find them; a female who's just had a litter of pups is quite vulnerable."

No, he was the first born. The puppy she ate and the puppy whose neck she broke were the healthiest out of the litter. What she did makes no sense at all.

Mabye you should separate her and the puppies so she doesn't kill the ones that are left. You'd have to bottle feed them tho.

They are 6 weeks old now...eating regular food and totally weaned so bottle feeding them isn't an issue. She has been removed from the home....she tried to attack me when I was taking the rest of the puppies from her because she was going after the rest of them trying to do god knows what to them the way she was growling at them and stuff. I think she just went crazy and snapped for some reason. Maybe some sort of post-pardom depression of something. I don't have a clue...I just know it sucks.

I'm really sorry to hear about this unfortunate ordeal for you and Sicrik. Things like this can take time to get out of your system. SC

It could be that she felt competition with the puppies for your attention. I hope the other pups are doing well
